Any tips for vegan eats in Maastricht? Happy Cow only lists a Loving Hut and something run from a squat that appears to be only open on Mondays (we're going on a weekend).

As far as I know there are only a few vegan friendly places in Maastricht,
the Loving Hut
the squatters café
a Lush store
two health food stores, de Natuurwinkel on the Theodoor Schaepkensstraat and Estafette on the Rechtstraat

There are probably some shawarma places that can make you a pita with falafel. Dutch french fries are cooked in vegetable oil, so those are safe to eat too. Most Dutch supermarkets stock Alpro soy yoghurt and pudding.

Hi, just checking back in to update on vegan eats in Maastricht!

I had some delicious frites from a friture (yum), a really nice (but very expensive!) meal at our hotel (which was a last minute decision because of rain, so they had about 15 minutes notice!), and a very tasty pasta dish with mushrooms and truffle oil from http://www.eetcafeceramique.nl/ (I emailed them beforehand to check if they could make a vegan dish). We tried to go to Loving Hut for lunch one day, but got there at 1.30 and they said they were closed (happy cow and other places on the internet say they're open til 2.30, so be aware!) That was a bit disappointing because it's a bit out of town so we had a wasted walk.

Good to hear you got some nice eats and very encouraging that even the non-veg oriented places managed to provide you with decent food. Veg-awareness is improving!

Yeah, the restaurant in the hotel we were in said they had around one vegan a week, which was surprising (they didn't even have a vegetarian main course on the menu) but they were very accommodating!

I'm afraid my response is too late to be of much use to the topic-starter, but maybe someone else will be visiting lovely Maastricht some day in the near future. So here goes. As it happens, one of my best vegan friends lived in Maastricht until recently. She came up with the following tips (for another forum).

Right by the trainstation Maastricht is the Cubico café. You can get a tasty pasta and salad. Only two things on the menu, but she says they're good.

There's Gadjah mas in the rechtstraat (near the trainstation, there's also an organic/healtfood store) has a vega menu, with tofu saté.

There's a vegan friendly Italian place in Heerlen. Has several vegan things on the menu.http://www.dapeco.nl/

Luik/Liege is relatively close by. It has a vegetarian burger restaurant.

You can request tofu with every main course (as a replacement, I am guessing, it wasn't clear), and they even have a vegan alternative to oyster sauce. And it's reasonably priced.

Thanks everyone! I totally appreciate this thread since I grew up in Maastricht, and will be going back for a visit sometime this year or next. Wow, I am shocked and excited to see this many options (I haven;'t been back since 2004). When I was in my teens there was a vegan restaurant in town, I kid you not. I never went but was fascinated by the fact that it was vegan.
