So...
I have school starting in May but my husband is reaching his vacation cap (burn it or lose it). I told him we could go somewhere for a few days. (Originally, we were going to go to Ireland in June but that is out now due to school)

Ideas I've had:
NYC - Lots of museums and stuff (well we have that here too) but maybe a show as well.
New Orleans - Neither of us have never been but figured it might be fun to hang out there for a couple days.

I've also looked at some european trips but my husband doesn't want to drive in europe which leaves us with tour groups. A lot of the tour group operators that I'd go with, seem to have a lot of summer trips but April seems sparse. I found one thing in Spain but I'm still contemplating.

I also was reading about tulips in Amsterdam... I can't tell you how much I love tulips. Then I was reading about itineraries where you go from Paris to Amsterdam via the train. But then I'd be responsible for planning the itinerary and although it'd be cool to visit the various museums, I would much rather someone else do the planning for me.

I just need some ideas that would be good for next month. If any has any, feel free to pipe up.

Do the airline websites do any "super hot" ticket prices or anything? Perhaps you could find the super cheap ticket and then make the traip around that one! But yeah, mostly you'd have to plan the itinerary- its probably too late for tour groups anyway.

What about the coasty-coast? Assateague (probably too close to home!), Outer Banks, Cumberland Island (love Cumberland- only accessible by ferry, so you would need to bring your camping gear on a wagon/cart/backpacks, but the campground is near the ferry so you aren't schlepping it super distances. And the armadillos crawl all over, but don't snuggle them so you get leprosy.), any number of SC islands (Hunting Island has a nice state park if you want to camp).

How about Toronto or Montreal (or, if you're driving, both). You still get to use your passport!

I dunno, the way this winter has gone I don't think I would recommend Canada in April. Just rain and and mud and dirt, yuck! But if you ended up in Toronto I'm sure a lot of PPKers would love to get together!

I think you should do the Amsterdam trip. I'm half Dutch and have never been but would love to see the tulips some day.

You might be able to do a non-tour group but you don't HAVE to plan. I'm sure the handful of real-life travel agents still around would be very happy to arrange train tickets and such, for a fee.

We went to Montreal a few years ago in May and it was beautiful.

My husband and I talked this morning and part of my unease about Europe is I've been wanting to go to Italy for 20 years and each time I go to Europe, it feels like a near miss. So.. We decided to go to Italy. I am excited and scared and excited. I did find a tour group and it was even discounted somewhat due to not being full 60 days prior the trip.

We will probably do some eastern US trips another year as this year looks packed for trips for us now with this trip.

Wooo! Italy! Where abouts you going there? How exciting!

I would say, if you are thinking again about the Netherlands (or anywhere in much of Europe) in the future... you don't necessarily need to get in a tour group or get much planning on. Public transport is great and I bopped about with minimal plans no bother the few times I've went (half the time by myself.) Trams and the underground and buses are all great and super efficient and easy for the most part in many countries. Especially in the Netherlands.

We are going to Rome->Naples->Amalfi Coast. We will be on our own for a couple days in Rome and then meet up with the tour group. I also like with the trip we picked that meals aren't included for the most part which means we'll be able to figure out our own food and not depend on the tour. I don't imagine being vegan in Italy will be too hard.

And I know that Europe generally has great public transportation and I think a trip in the future may focus on tulips or go to Spain. I've really wanted to ride one of the high speed trains sometime.

linanil, I did that exact same itinerary (without a group) with my husband like 10 years ago. We rented a car when we left Rome and drove to Naples and then down the Coast. So loved each place for different reasons and haha at least you'll be saved from the insanity of driving in Naples (and even on foot, look out for those scooters!) but I bet you will find being on a large bus going down the Coast pretty scary-in-a-fun-way too. If you can do a side trip somehow in the Amalfi area definitely go to Paestum! Man I really really want to go back now.

Yay, have a great time in Italy!

If you do plan on coming to The Netherlands/Amsterdam sometime, pop into the Europe subforum. The Belgian and Dutch PPK'ers are quite an active bunch. We can give you lots of tips and love having meetups to show visitors around. Amsterdam is getting more vegan friendly all the time and Den Haag and Rotterdam are really great for vegans already.
