No, you should set up camp at Lard of the Fries. Whenever we're in Melbourne we stay on Flinders Lane, so we eat an embarrassing amount of fries. It's pretty great.

And yeah, I second the monster vegan breakfast at Soul Food.

I love veg out time for quick, kinda healthy asian veg food in St Kilda. I haven't been to the new soul mamma but thought the old was kind of meh. Love the french toast from monk bodhi dhama (and great coffee) which is close by. For other Melb recommendations, i suggest trippy taco for awesome mexican, yongs green food for raw cheesecake, Lard of the fries for vegan junk food, la panella for vegan donuts (if you have a car), coco loco for vegan crepes. How long are you here for? Pm me if you need more advice. Actually agree with most of laurenbelle suggestions.

Yeah, my votes are for Lard of the fries (the new double burgers are really hitting the greasy awesomeness that a burger should be). I also really like going to veg out and taking it down to the beach.

Veggie bar I'm pretty over, IMO its surprisingly thin on vegan options.

is coco loco open again? I heard it had been shut?

this is definitely on the menu. Have only had one 'big breakfast' before, at Naked Espresso in Sydney last year, so we're keen for a re-match.



The internet seems to concur that Monk Bodhi Dharma does really amazing coffee so we are very keen to seek that out.
We won't have a car, but don't mind wasting half a day on public transport in order to experience donuts and pies so we were planning on trekking to La Panella.

On the non-culinary side, other than a few museums/galleries, the botanic gardens and a general wander around the city, are there any must-see sights for a first time visitor?

as if you need a car to go to Preston :( that's my old home and I practically never took the car! either take the 86 tram and wander down from Bell, or the stop after. or take the train and it's basically a block away! no problem! :D

sweet. When we were travelling in Europe, we would frequently walk 15-20km in a day, so I'm sure we will find our way to Preston in pursuit of awesomeness!



Phoenix head office is a few minutes from my house! I've never tried [or even seen] the creaming soda, but then again we are total tight-arses here and never buy drinks or go to cafes. Gonna make up for it in Melbourne!

well, we are going to Devin Townsend/Dillinger Escape Plan on Wednesday night and to Soundwave all day Friday, so there's that.

Dillinger were like the only thing I wanted to see at Soundwave. I think Boyfriend and I are going to Sydney the Monday after next or something to see Thursday and Circa Survive- it's more his thing than mine, but I'm not totally opposed to reminiscing about my Thursday-loving school days.

Anyway, I never do anything in Melbourne other than eat and shop (and see football if Boyfriend makes me go) so I'm of limited assistance. Unless you want to buy dresses/action figures/German books.

Yes to everything everyone has already said. And the Epping train to Preston from Flinders St doesn't take more than 25 mins. Then you can also check out Preston markets and all the awesome Asian groceries.

If you head out to Footscray (only a couple of stops from the city on the train!), there's an awesome vegetarian Vietnamese place, apparently it does really good Pho, according to a Vietnamese friend. I had the banh mi and that was pretty great too. There's also an Ethiopian place that does a lot vegan food but for some reason I can't remember what it's called..... damn. (I'm not very useful, am I? Sorry).

Also, you probably won't have time, but if you feel like coming along to the Melbourne Uni Food Co-op we'll have just re-opened and will be serving lots of delicious rolls, pies, cakes (all vegan, mostly gf) and hot food..... can't help but spruik my new workplace a little bit cos I think we are pretty great, and I hope PPKers come visit me there.

Any New Zealanders know where I can get yellow tail wine from?

Kittykins - I bought it in the Thorndon New World a couple of times, but it did get harder to find the last year or so. If you can't find it, Oxford Landing is more readily available and they label their wines really clearly (I think all are suitable for vegans, but one or two may be vegetarian).

Boyfriend informed me with great excitement this morning that Grilld's chips are now vegan. Huzzah! I would walk over there for lunch if it weren't always packed and I weren't so terribly lazy.

Oh, they've been vegan for a while. They're really not that impressive, though I do like the salt they coat them in.

Yeah, I heard it had been for a few months now but no one at the Grilld here seemed to know about it. Or care, maybe.

It just annoys me that to make the "vegan" burgers vegan, you have to take most things off. Then they charge you to add anything back on. And they ask you which sauce you want with your chips - then charge you for it.

I like the Indian-y chickpea one or whatever it is. The others just seem like once they're veganised, there's nothing left but bread and the burger patty. It's no Lard of the Fries, but it beats the other options around here.

Agreed. The chickpea one is most filling, too.

Any of the others, and I'd need to eat three before feeling satisfied.

I would recommend walking down the laneways in city area (degraves st etc) to look at graffitti etc, shopping at rose st artists market on sat or sunday (close to brunswick street-fitrzoy where yongs, veggie bar etc are).
