So, I think I must be going a little mad because I've decided I should do a huge, long round the world trip. I feel like this might be the last I have both the time and the money to do something like this. So, I suppose my question is has anyone else here done anything like this? And if so what were your experiences? Also, I was wondering what places you would recommend as worth visiting?
Thank you!

my husband and I spent most of 2008 wandering around Europe being homeless and broke. It was the best thing we've ever done and I would recommend it to anyone who has the time/inclination. We visited: England London, Alton, Portsmouth France Paris, Avignon, Carcassonne Netherlands Leiden, Den Haag, Amsterdam, Delft Belgium Ghent, Brugge, Brussels, Antwerp, Mol Germany Trier, Freiburg, Frankfurt, Cologne, Bremen, Hamburg, Wacken Luxembourg Denmark Copenhagen Sweden Gothenburg, Stockholm, Malmö, Kiruna Finland Helsinki, Espoo Portugal Porto, Lisbon, Lagos Spain Seville, Grenada, Valencia, Barcelona, San Sebastian Italy Genoa, Riomaggiore, Florence, Pisa, Rome, Pompeii, Naples, Palermo Latvia Riga, Sigulda Scotland Edinburgh, Glasgow, Innerleithen, Selkirk Northern Ireland Belfast Republic of Ireland Dublin Wales Cardiff
If you're contemplating spending a bit of time in Western Europe I'd be happy to help with tips/advice on places to see/to not bother with/how to get by on a mega budget! : )

I would say that travelling around Latin America and Africa would be the most inexpensive in terms of accomodation and food. Once you get where you are (that would cost the most), the rest of the costs are minimal.. And it is possible to be vegan in most places :)

That sounds amazing oncewerewesties, I'd be really interested to hear your tips for getting by on a budget. I've just noticed your location- if I lived in New Zealand I don't think I'd ever leave! I've been a few times and I adore it.
Funnily the places I narrowed it down to (before reading these replies) are europe, latin america and africa!

Southeast Asia is cheap! You can get a hostel bed for $1 per night, or $30 for an actual hotel room in the big cities (Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh, Phnom Penh). Food and drinks are even cheaper (I drank a lot of $2 long island iced teas in Vietnam), and transport is super affordable. I caught buses everywhere, but a couple of guys I was travelling with missed a bus so they paid a taxi driver $30 to take them from Ho Chi Minh City to Phnom Penh.
You can also get pretty cheap flights from London to Kuala Lumpur now, so you could go after doing Europe. Air Asia do amazing flight sales too, last year I got a ticket from Kuala Lumpur to Sri Lanka for $40. They're worth keeping an eye on.

Ohhhh... I would love to go to somewhere like Vietnam. I always forget because it is so expensive to travel from Canada to southeast Asia.. So inexpensive and DELICIOUS and light food :)

haha, I would definitely never want to live anywhere but New Zealand but it's pretty much a kiwi rite of passage that you have go and be a wandering nomad in Europe before you're a 'real' grown up! I also second [third? whatever] the s.e. asia suggestions for ultimate cheap travel and amazing experiences. I don't know about from where you are, but here you can get good deals on 'round the world' tickets that let you book in unlimited flights so long as you keep going in the same direction, so you could take in a bit of south america, a bit of europe, a bit of asia etc and maybe not even break the bank?
