This is difficult. What are your criteria? What do you like to do? Are you looking for entertainment, romance, history, food? Do you want to pack a lot of stuff in or just enjoy yourself at a more leisurely pace?

Don't mind. Really don't. We're open to anything. Lots of places to see. Beaches would be a nice bonus. We're not romantic, but we'll be on our honeymoon so who knows what'll happen. Good vegan options.
We liked Philly, that's the only place we've spent a lot of time in - the other places on our last tour were more fleeting visits (New York, Bethlehem, Baltimore, Washington, Richmond, Durham, Greenville, Gainesville)

I'd skip the US and go to Montreal. I've been wanting to go there for a while...

Yeah, San Francisco would be a good option for you. I haven't been there in 15 years... I should do something about that.

San Francisco is lovely
If you're looking for a hip city with a really neat vibe (and it would be really pretty in late October), there's Burlington, Vermont.
While it would be chilly, and definitely does not have a beach, I'm always going to be partial to the City of Chicago.

I second popomatic's assertion that New England would be great in the fall! However, it's also...crisp. So, probably not the best for beaches - but you could always check out Maine! I'm partial to NYC or Boston as well.

Oh I'd vote for Montreal as well!! I loved Montreal when I visited. I also (surprisingly) had a great time in Orlando last week. I actually didn't think I'd like it. Although when I went to the Florida keys a few years ago, I liked that a lot.

Oh heck yeah! Maine would be really nice as well.
I offered up Burlington because it's one of those cities with lots of little shops and restauants to walk to, there's a few breweries in town, the vibe is laid back and friendly, and the autumn leaves are a sight to behold.
You could, in theory, (check the immigration laws and/or car rental agreements before you do so) drive up to Quebec from Burlington. It's not too bad a drive, and it would be very pretty to see.
Another place that I'm fond of is Santa Fe and Taos, New Mexico. You would likely have to fly into Albequerque and then drive up to Santa Fe (a somewhat long and boring drive), but the mountains are spectacular and there are plenty of nice inns to stay at.
I think it really depends on what kind of American culture you're looking to sample. Miami might be a fun place to visit too. It's a rather nutty place, very busy, plenty of Cuban American culture to experience, and it's got plenty of beach, but I haven't been there in decades so I'm not sure how much it's declined and/or whether or not it's veggie friendly.

If I were on my honeymoon in October, I'd want somewhere with scarves and coats and autumnal leaves. Beaches, meh I say. Meh.

Portland is only eighty miles from the Oregon coast. Cannon Beach can still be gorgeous in October, far fewer tourists, good rates on cozy hotels, and stunning beach.

Oh and October is definitely a good month for DC. Summer is hot and crowded. There are also some good vegan eats.

I haven't traveled too much in the U.S. but I love the art, the food, the people, the mountains of Asheville, NC.

I really liked Miami, I think it is one of the most interesting towns in the US, there is little Havana, little Haiti, South Beach and other places to explore. If you definitely want warm weather, beaches, fried plantains and fruity drinks that is the place to go.
Otherwise I really like Seattle, you can easily take a day trip to the rain forest, the coast, the mountains, Vancouver or Portland from there and there are lots of fun shops, good food, and interesting things to see.
I like New Orleans too, there is lots to see and you can walk around and it would be nice weather.
I wouldn't go to the east coast or the middle during October but I fear the cold, if you are into it then Chicago would be kind of different then the places you have already been and is one of the greatest cities in the country.

I was going to suggest the Smoky Mountains area in general. It's not very urban, but it's absolutely gorgeous. There are a lot of good veg restaurants in Asheville and also in Boone, NC.
