ok anywhere fabulous in the general area of Scotch Plains/Watchung?

I missed this, did you already come out? We live not so far from there and there isn't anything particularly fabulous or especially vegan in this neck of the woods. There is a pretty good burrito place in Summit if you wind up taking 78 it might make sense to stop there (tito's burritos is what it's called). You will also be right nearby Westfield which has quite a lot of restaurants, so lots to choose from. I would tell you to stop for awesome bagels but you have bagels where you're coming from, so that is probably unnecessary!

oh yeah we were around there briefly to drop my mom off at her friend's place and played a little bit at the Watchung Reservation playground (cute but not super-great for littler kids), then ended up just hitting Foodswings on our way home thru Williamsburg. H worked in the Scotch Plains/Westfield area for like 10 years pre-kids but he wasn't vegan then so had no clue anyway.

Malka vaguely likes that playground. We've been a couple times.

Hey! I'm in NJ for a few weeks. Anyone want to meet up? I'm always up for Lalibela, or Rutherford or Maywood Pancake House, but totally open to suggestions if there's something else to try.

Its so good! Everything is delicious and housemade. We love the Big Wac and their vegan softserve. We'd love to see you next week - maybe there or HLS? http://iampositivitea.com/

We ate at the Pita Grill in Morristown yesterday and it was suprisingly good! They had quite a few vegan selections I'd never seen on Pita Grill menus in NYC and the falafel were also much tastier. My husband had a seitan gyro and it was delicious!! My kid went crazy over their hummus. I would definitely go back there again.

The Morris museum on the other hand...kind of a bust. It was totally meh.

Have any of you been to Northlandz? I just saw this Sony ad or something that features Northlandz... and now I REALLY want to go to New Jersey. I've never thought I'd say that! http://www.northlandz.com

Whoa! But no, and I think it's in the middle of nowhere. New Jersey is actually amazing, though, you should definitely come.

Huh, funny, it's always just touted as a suburb of new york to the rest of North America!

So cool! Thanks for the tips Mars and Aubade!

Flemington is the land of farms and outlet malls, so its funny to think of this cool train exhibition being there!

Maybe we need an NJ meet-up!

aw, i like the morris museum. when my friend and i were unemployed we would go to all of the free or very low fee museums in the area. last time i was there they had a really cool fossil exhibit.

The Morris Museum is hit or miss. I once went to an awesome Star Trek exhibit there, though. I like the Newark museum, though, and they have some awesome special events. And totally free!

New Jersey is not a suburb of NY. :p it is so the other way around. :) I spent the day in New York yesterday for a training and the whole time was like, ugh, this is so annoying, so glad I don't have to commute to NY anymore.

Ooh, Pita Grill, that's new to me. I can never find somewhere I want to eat in Morristown.

I am so lusting after the SO Tasty Vegan pop up in Montclair. Their mushroom madness menu was amazeballs and so reasonably priced at $40 for 4 courses. SOmeone needs to come with me. B has said he'd watch L if I want to go.

One: Cream of mushroom and toasted caraway bisque, chili oil, crispy shallots.

Two:Baked polenta Napoleon- crimini pate, shiitake bacon, arugula, lemon fennel vinaigrette, chive.

Three:Mushroom story- seared king trumpet mushroom, spring pea purée, balsamic caviar. Citrus herb encrusted portobello carpaccio, pesto'd zucchini noodles. Heart of Palm and oyster mushroom fritter, caper remoulade, red pepper relish.

Four: Forrest floor- buried chocolate rose petal truffle, dark chocolate soil, lemon cheesecake stem, lavender macaroon, vanilla mist custard, candied mint leaves.

Someone ping me when they have a menu that isn't mushrooms, mushrooms, and more mushrooms. No mushrooms would be a good amount of mushrooms. Hopefully I won't have to work that magical night!

You can follow SO Tasty on Facebook and hear when their next dinner is! https://www.facebook.com/SoTastyVegan

Here is their website: http://sotastyvegan.com/

I didn't get to go to the mushroom one - heard about it too late, but would LOVE to have gone.

I've heard from a few people who have been that her food is like art, its so amazing and wonderful, and she comes to some of the Montclair Vegan events and is really friendly and nice and committed to making great, accessible vegan food.

I really love her menus - they seem whimsical and really artistic.

The St. Patrick's Day one on Wednesday looks delish:

Amuse Bouche:
Farmer cashew cheeze, herb flax cracker, funny mustard, micro greens.

One:
Creamy potato leek bisque, Irish almond soda bread, herb compound butter, chili oil, chives.

Two:
Corned-bella and cabbage- braised warm cabbage and caraway slaw, peppercorn and juniper brined portobello, crisp turnip.

Three:
Mangers and Bash- tempeh and crimini sausage, caramelized onion and hard cider gravy, whipped Yukon gold potatoes, sautéed garlicky kale, roasted maple and thyme scented carrots, mushy spring pea purée, pickled radish and shallot relish.

Four:
Vegan Baileys ice cream, Irish coffee glazed chocolate cake, spearmint chocolate almond bark.

7:00pm
Trattoria Rustica
517 Bloomfield ave
Montclair, NJ

$39.95
