It's really reasonably priced, too.

Finally made it to Goldie's in Asbury Park tonight. It was soo good! I feel like the vegan triangle is complete - Candle 79 in NY, Sprig & Vine in PA, and Goldie's in NJ.

I had stuffed cabbage and the olive cake for dessert, plus their special cocktail - ginger, pear juice & sake (only $5!). My husband had shepherd's pie and chocolate croquettes. Everything was good but the croquettes were totally OUT OF THIS WORLD. They were sort of like fried zeppoles, rolled in sugar and coconut, but with melted hot chocolate inside. Yuuummmy.

I see a lot more trips to Asbury Park in my future.

Yum! If you want a PPK meet-up I would be up for that! I love Asbury Park!

That would be fun! The only thing is it definitely isn't kid friendly. I don't think they're open for lunch, and it is all about the bar. Maybe on a weekend at brunch, but it is a pretty small, fancier kind of place.

It just happens to be halfway between our house and my moms, and my kid was sleeping over at her house last night, so that's why we got to go on the way home from dropping him off.

On April 12th, 2014 I will be doing a pop-up shop inside Red Moon Lifestyle & Home on Bangs Avenue in Asbury Park. At that time I will be taking orders for Easter chocolates!!

Sooo It looks like I might be in Rahway for a week later in May as a visiting scientist at Merck... Any tips for eating or places that I must check out?

NJ is generally a pretty easy place to be vegan. i'm not super familiar with that immediate area, but Happycow says there are several vegetarian Indian restaurants in Edison/Iselin (a few miles southwest of Rahway) and one in Carteret.

there are several places i'd recommend that are further away from where you'll be based, so it would be helpful to know how mobile you'll be and how much free time you expect to have.

But, I will have my car, so I could go wherever if it is in reason. I've heard that NJ traffic is terrible, which isn't exactly encouraging...

the traffic often depends on which direction you're headed and the time of day. on the main thoroughfares (GSP, NJ turnpike, etc) it tends to be a lot heavier going towards NYC in the morning and away from NYC in the afternoon/evening. local traffic in urbanized parts of central & northern NJ is pretty heavy all day long, at least when i last lived & worked there around 4 years ago.

so if you wanted to, say, go out for Ethiopian food one night after work, it might be easier and/or faster to drive to Mesob in Montclair (pretty direct going north on the GSP) than to Makeda in New Brunswick, even though the latter is closer to Rahway.

i hope i managed to say that all in a way that's not too confusing!

what sort of restaurants/cuisines are you most interested in trying on this visit?

If you come to Montclair we should arrange a PPK meet up, there are a few of us in that area. If you do want to go up toward Montclair (which I think you should), there are tons of places, including Mundo Vegan, Positivitea (soft serve! and burgers), and Veggie Heaven (Chinese) that are all vegan.

Lalibela Ethiopian in South Orange is probably closer than Montclair, though. Rahway is near where I live, but unfortunately there aren't any vegan places in that area as far as I know. If you go south there are tons of good Indian options.

Good to know! My itinerary is still up in the air. I'll either be there the week of the 19th or 26th, depending on how it gets worked out later today. Not sure how adventuresome I'll be with driving, as I'm not a fan of heavy traffic, especially if I'm unfamiliar with the area.

ETA: As for trying things, I'd like to branch out from the usual Asian that is common here (Thai, Japanese, Korean). Anything more of an African/Middle East flavor would be welcome.

Ariann, an informal meet-up would be nice! I haven't been able to do one in ages...My hotel is in Cranford, which seems like 16 miles from Montclair? How is driving on the Garden State Parkway in the evening? Turns out I'm. Not so fond I'll be in NJ starting Monday June 9th to the 13th. I was down for two days last week and thought Westfield was cute. Tasty sushi at Asian Fusion.

You are staying probably 5 miles from my apartment! I am in Union County. Parkway North in the evenings tends to be fine I think. You want to avoid going south at rush hour, though.

I know I am not free on the 9th and might not be free the 11th (except maybe for earlyish dinner, work meeting at 8 I think), but the rest of the nights are open for me.

I will get Tofulish to come look at this thread and weigh in.

does anyone live/work/commute near chesterfield and want my pick your own subscription? (i have a boxed share at honeybrook that gets delivered down here, but i'm not making a 70 mile round trip each week just for a handful of pick your own crops.) i offered it to my sister who lives 13 miles north, but she's been slow getting back to me, so i'm taking that as a no. (meanwhile 2 weeks of crops meant for me have been rotting in the field.)

i'll PM you my email address. i think they only need your name, but maybe they'll also need your address? not sure. then i'll e-mail your information to them, and then once you're on the list, you should be able to just go and pick up my badge and keep using it until the end of PYO season. seems kinda straightforward.

I'm going to be in Jersey City in October for a wedding. Is there anywhere I should eat in that area? I probably won't have a car.

My sister lives in Jersey City! The Cinnamon Snail might still be at the Thursday Farmers Market at the Grove Street PATH Station. Ibby's Falafel in also on Grove Street. Subia's Organic Cafe http://www.seamless.com/food-delivery/s ... ty.33128.r is in the same area a few blocks or more away.

To the best of my knowledge there isn't a vegan only restaurant in JC.

This blog might be helpful: http://jerseycityvegan.com/

You will also be a quick path ride away from NYC.

if you like Indian food, there's several vegan-friendly places near Journal Square (mostly in the few blocks known as Bombay Square), including two vegetarian dosa places.

apparently there's a Two Boots location in JC now, which serves 3(?) kinds of vegan pizza.

it looks better for vegan food than it was when i last lived there in 2010, but i'd also recommend going to Manhattan if you can.

Two Boots is, I think, of Newark Ave very close to Grove Street and they do have vegan pizza. I also think the Asbury Park restaurant Porta is open or opening in JC in that area and they have 2 vegan pizza's and a vegan pasta.
