Go Lightly, run by the lovely Jen Chaky (a vegan for 22 years) is starting its vegan cafe on September 13! The big kick-off is going to be at a HUGE event for Puppy Mill Awareness on Sept. 10 in Brookdale Park. She is really excited to be providing delicious vegan options to remind people that its great to care about all animals, not just the pups :) http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=196735553698249Oh and Sweet Avenue started serving savory sandwiches! Their vegan egg salad was so good! Perfect snack/lunch!

So hi New Jersey! I'm going with the manfriend this weekend to see his family in Mendham/Morristown before he leaves :( and we need a restaurant! His family is not well versed in veganism nor are they adventurous eaters. Any experiences??

Veggie Heaven Denville is close to Morristown! I'm going to be in Morristown tomorrow and am excited to eat there again (assuming the flooding has subsided) They have a great vegan sushi bar too and fresh juices... NOM! Oh and their cheesecake is so good! http://www.veggieheavennj.com/

after seeing what main street in denville looked like and knowing they're across the street from the river, i'm going to go ahead and assume that they're not going to be open anytime soon. but if they are, let me know because i'm worried about them : )

I'll ask the Montclair VH folks today. I really hope the floodwaters recede soon, this is crazy and so sad.

i have family in downtown denville. when i talk to my dad, i'll see if they were allowed to go back home. my guess is that if VH flooded, they'll not only need to get cleaned up, but they'd need to be re-inspected. which i imagine could take a while since it looked like most of main street was under water.
but my fingers are still crossed that they are fine!
(totally selfish side note: my birthday is in a few weeks and we'll be home the weekend before so if they are not open for my jersey weekend birthday dinner i am going to be totally bummed!)

The owner of Veggie Heaven Denville said the restaurant is waist-deep in water and will require a complete renovation before it can reopen. So not this weekend. Its just so sad.

RJM, you could try Chand Palace for veggie Indian. Its not vegan, but has vegan options. I'm not a huge fan, but some people love it. http://www.chandpalace.com

So I went to Asbury Park yesterday. The Twisted Tree was way better than I thought it would be. My foccacia melt was delicious! And the sugar cookie dough shake from Eddie Confetti's was great too.
Considering the last time I was in Asbury Park was to go to a concert at the Fast Lane in oh, 1992 or so, I was so impressed with how the boardwalk is coming back. It is really a shame to have lost Palace Amusements, but otherwise it was looking waaaaay better than it did.
That said, it was pretty obvious the re-development is only gentrification for white people. All of the stores were staffed by white people and 90% of people there (and it was pretty crowded) were white. You would think that something would have been learned from the riots in the 70s. I spent all last night googling but I couldn't find any news or anything about any efforts to include locals in the redevelopment. I really wish there was something I could do. (yes, I'm white but I still think it is super unfair) It looks to me like history is doomed to repeat itself.

I had Kaya's all-you-can-eat sunday brunch today. There was some discussion upthread about the new location being disappointing, but today was redeeming. I almost had to be rolled out of there I ate so much. On my plates were:
green salad w/ pickled onions + creamy herb dressing potato salad pasta salad "chicken" nuggets bbq ribz pierogies in a delicious sauce roasted potatoes eggplant parmigiana garlicy sauteed kale
Everything was really delicious. I don't even like eggplant but it was so good I didn't realize it was eggplant until I heard the waitress say it. I thought it was lasagna. The texture of the eggplant was perfect. It was so cool to be able to eat everything at the buffet for a change.

Is there somewhere in North Jersey that does a good vegan breakfast besides Rutherford Pancake House? My family wants to go out for breakfast tomorrow, but there's a parade in Rutherford, and my dad doesn't want to have to deal with the parking there.

I live in the Asbury Park area. I am new to these foods and often it's hard to get me to say "wow this is awesome and it's vegan". However, Isa's recipes have had me doing that (ie eggplant bacon, pumpkin cheesecake, stew and dumplings, chocolate pumpkin bread - and on and on). There are several restaurants in the area where they also have me saying "wow this is awesome" on some things I've tried: If you are down the shore - you can try: Crust & Crumble in Asbury Park: http://crustandcrumble.com/index.htmTwisted Tree also Asbury Park: http://www.twistedtreecafe.com/TTMenu.htmI have had a lot of things here. I lovvvvve the tofu meatballs. The sauce for them is so good! The owners are super nice. Sadly they are closed until the New Year. Kaya's Kitchen in Belmar: http://www.kayaskitchenbelmar.com/ Good Karma Cafe in Red Bank: http://www.goodkarmacafenj.com/index.htmlIt's nice to know Loving Hut is down here in Matawan (I went to one up north and liked it a lot).

Anyone up for a New Years Day brunch meetup? I feel like I've spent so much time in NJ visiting my parents and have only met one NJ PPKer. I was thinking either Rutherford Pancake House for more breakfasty brunch options, or Mesob a little later in the day if people would rather do lunch, but I'm open to suggestions anywhere in North Jersey.

Larisa I would have loved to come. I will be with my dad who has been recovering from a collapsed lung. I live down the shore (but my family is all up north). If you ever head down this way there are some great places too! Happy new Year!!
