I just got a text from 'bang?! saying there seems to be a virus attacking her PC. This is what she says is wrong:
System error! Your security is in danger! Spyware! Download this Win 7 Total Security thing to fix it! Infected! And stuff...

Can anyone help?

I had that once on a computer and my whole harddrive had to be wiped.

Is she sure she didn't just hit a site that is posing as a virus and if she clicks on the link she will be taken to the real virus instead of the Windows site?

Yeah, that happened to me once. Lots of scary pop-ups that would undoubtedly have led me to a virus if I'd believed them that I was infected. I don't remember what ultimately happened (shut off, rebooted and ran my actual virus scan, probably) but nothing was lost forever.

Restart, hit F8 or DEL repeatedly while PC is booting up until you get options: select safe mode with networking and run a virus scan.

I talked to her earlier, and she's kinda freaking out about it. Unfortunately I'm not particularly helpful because I have a Mac, so I couldn't walk her through the fix I found. She's just gonna wait until tomorrow and see if she can sort it. But it sounded like something that shouldn't be difficult to fix (hopefully).

The only tabs I had open on my computer were the BBC, Guardian and the PPK. Then all of a sudden all this shiitake posing as Windows system pop-ups and what-not started. I didn't click on any of them because I would never do that, I googled it just now (I'm at work) and everything on this site: http://www.malwarehelp.org/win-7-securi ... -2010.html is what was happening. Except I don't understand the instructions to remove it! (or even if it's trustworthy) And I can't get online without the bloody thing trying to take over my browser. I've not tried with Chrome yet (because I forgot I had it installed) but Firefox is borked aswell.

I had this and it was a total pain in the asparagus. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware will get rid of it, but it may require a few workarounds to get it installed, as the version of the malware I had rewrites the file associations so you can't install anything or run anything without causing all kinds of mayhem.

Yeah, this malware runs even in safe mode, which makes it particularly annoying. I burned a whole Sunday trying to figure out how to disinfect my computer a couple weeks ago.

Okay, these were the instructions that actually worked (mostly): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-r ... l-security

There were a few differences in the version I had from the instructions there:
- The process wasn't named "tsc.exe". Apparently, the newer version assigns a random three letter name to the process, which makes it tough to distinguish from all those other random processes with three-letter names that do some mysterious windows stuff in the background.
- Terminating the process had no effect. It would start right up again and cause headaches. I think I took note of the file path in Process Explorer, found the exe and deleted it.
- The virus was still blocking me from installing Malwarebytes. Based on advice in forums elsewhere, I tried renaming the Malwarebytes install file to something else. No luck. I finally got the bright idea to run it from a command prompt, and that worked.

Once I got malwarebytes installed, though, it cleaned it up with no further problems.

Dudes! I am on the internet! On the internet without pop-ups and shiitake! Hiiiiiiiiiii!

I 'borrowed' a memory stick from lost property (it was handed in in November and only had the Hawaii 5-0 theme tune on it so I think I'm ok keeping for now) this afternoon and downloaded the Malwarebytes thingy onto it then ran it on my computer when I got in a couple hours ago. It seems to have gone ok (so far)... Finger's crossed! Thanks, loves <3

I had this happen recently and I had to get Geeksquad to clear it out, although I saw formulas to clear them myself like what GL and h-dog suggested but I'm not computer savvy enough to know what's what. I feel like mine came from a website but I'm not really sure. Anyway, good thing you're back!
