How do you guys store your yarn so that it doesnt get all tangled up and you end up having to your way through a crazy jungle of yarn to get to the ball you want on the bottom. I have a huge basket for mine, but it gets too crazy. Should I keep my yarn in bags? Should I get drawers instead?

If you could find a huge wine storage thing or maybe an old fashioned mail sorter station, those would be really pretty and functional. I've seen them around thrift shops from time to time. Mine just wind up in a big rubbermaid tub and occasionally wind up as the big ball from hell.

I bought some hanging shoes drawers at ikea for my yarn. Yes, I love my yarn enough to give up closet space. It works pretty well. For the yarn that doesn't fit, I keep projects separated in bags.

thanks guys! wow, esme, that looks amazing and so cozy! i wish i had more shelf space like that. I love the shoe hanger idea, but I also have no closet space. I already have to keep my clothes on a garment rack in my bedroom. stupid new york apartments! I think bags in the giant basket is going to have to be the way to go. Someday I will totally keep my yarn in a bookshelf! i seriously love it.

esme wrote: Best. I just have a big box that I keep them all in. When they start getting too loose and limp (especially if you pull from the center), I roll them into smaller balls and secure the tail with a rubber band. That way, nothing gets tangled and it's just a box of balls. Projects, needles, etc go in separate bags.

oh! rubberbands! that's a really good idea! I usually make things into balls before I start a new project, so that would be perfect.

If I stored my yarn like that, I'd hate to see what the apartment looked like after work with two cats.
I store my yarn in my dresser drawers. Along with fabric and I'm running out of room and just placed a yarn order online.
Maybe it's just me but I don't have a lot of trouble with tangled yarn.

hopefully, he won't move before next christmas because that's probably the next time i'll be at his house.

I've only been knitting for a year, so I haven't accrued much yarn yet. I keep it all in a fabric bin I bought at Target. Projects I'm working on are usually strewn over the couch and coffee table, which, thankfully, doesn't annoy Fred. And we don't have pets (sad), so no worries about that. I keep all of my needles in one of those bags you get when you buy a pair of Toms.
I like the rubber band idea. I'm stealing that when my collection starts to get out of control. And I'm totally jelly of esme's bookshelves. And yarn collection.

Esme, thanks for the inspiration. I cleaned off a shelf! Now all of my other craft stuff fits in my giant basket. It's also good because this means I can't get anymore yarn until I use up some of this stuff by finishing the blanket I'm working on Yarn Org by ijustdiedinhere, on Flickr

great! i wish my bookshelf weren't so open in the back or i'd do the same (open and far from wall). i have one of those huge rubbermaid tub things and then have them bagged together by texture/weight - i'm right now trying to use up as much as possible before we move so just making it as easy as possible to use.

Argh, I have two giant rubbermaid tubs for my yarn and everything is so jumbled. One tub is the cheap-o yarn I need to give away and the other has all my fancy expensive yarn. I really like the idea of using a book shelf! Unfortunately, my book shelf is occupied by fabric and sewing stuff so I'll have to reorganize a bit. Someday...

I love the bookshelves of yarn!!
I keep current projects in bags in a basket (some bags are simple ones I made, some are in ziplocks). Yarn waiting for me to have time for it is in a rubbermaid tub under my bed. Yarn I should give away and will probably never use is in a box under my bed.
