So, about a month ago my coworker talked me into (okay, it didn't really take much convincing) doing a drag number in his drag night that he puts on about once a month. It's a pretty small night, still pretty under the radar so I felt like it would be a good place to get my toes wet in it without feeling like a fool. Well, it's now in a week! I'm feeling pretty nervous, want it to be really good, and I really feel emotionally the same about this idea as I do about my visual art. So this feels like a physical thing I'm working on, something i production, hence posting in The Workshop.
I would love some feedback from everyone!
I toyed with different drag names for a while. My name (for this one night anyhow) is pretty set in stone now, as it's on the flyers.
So even though it's set in stone for this night, I'd love your feedback on this for if I decide to stick with drag. To the layman who doesn't know the space nerd ref, does it sound okay? What type of person does it conjure to mind?
My other ideas (and why I nixed them) were:
Marsha-Anne (felt like too girly and bubbly, I imagine myself as more sultry and sexy. Though I do love this name) Dystopia (My idea for a name that was more broad-spectrum, I felt like I might want the freedom to be Pop-y or Rock-y if I felt like it. But in the end I'm just a dork so I really did want a dork reference) Marsy Pan (I still like this, but didn't get good feedback from it. Also, again, I feel like it lost most of the space dorkiness and solely was a food reference which is't really something I care about much. But I think it's cute regardless.)
A month ago when I first decided to do this, I thought right away I would do this song:
But then when I started to get name ideas, I started to realize this song doesn't really fit with the character that was coming to mind. (And why I toyed with Dystopia a lot)
The character that kept coming to mind had that 1960's sexy, confident, sultry, naughty lady that you might find trying to seduce Captain Kirk. So one night I was listening to an old favorite album from my childhood when this song came on:
I love the idea of doing this. I mean, since I only have a week, it's pretty decided that I am going to be doing it, no matter how good the decision is.
But a couple people have stated that they think people tend to want to hear songs they are more familiar with, that both the song ideas I have are a bit too under-the-radar.
What do you think? Also, feel free to point me in the direction of other sung-by-a-lady-person songs that might be fun to see performed as drag but also fit with a space dork/femme fatale like me. Doesn't have to be the same genre or decade as either song I posted.
(P.S. since I'm trans and spent a long time trying to get away from being a lady this brings up a whole other slew of stuff, but for some reason I'm feeling really into it. And I love the way my body looks and fits into these kind of clothes now. I really do look like I'm in drag. Honestly at first I was really scared I would put on a dress and makeup and all of a sudden look like how I used to, and all the years of transition would disappear. Hah. Definitely not. That felt really awesome actually.)

i have no taste and not much experience in this but i just wanted to say good for you!!!!! it sounds like you've put a lot of thought into this and i'm sure you will be FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAbulous!!!! Make sure there are photos!
Wow, good luck! I'm sure your performance will be wonderful! Wish I could come to give you support on the night.
The only thing I could think of that might fit with your sci-fi theme is 'Staci Stasis' by Zombina and the Skeletones, which is about being in love with someone who is suspended animation in a tank on a space station.

My first thought was Blondie's Rapture - that might be fun to do.
There's a Carpenter's song that fits the space theme, but it's not really suited for a femme fatale performance.
I don't really get the reference of your stage name, but I like the sound of it anyway .. if that helps you at all. Good luck! Please let us know how it turned out.

Moonraker. This is the clear choice. Shirley Bassey even did a technoesque remix a few years back.

Unfortunately my epic day of life and death happened on this same day so I had to cancel! Pretty bummed about that, but I'll definitely do it again somehow. In the meantime, since I promised ya'll some pictures, I thought I'd mess around and try to do makeup. DUDES, IT'S PRETTY HARD! Also, it's all my roommates 'real-girl' stuff, so I think I need to buy some more drag tried and true stuff, doing the foundation/highlighting stuff like they do was pretty impossible with this stuff. When I do this for real I'll definitely do false eyelashes and mascara (she didn't have any) and also I think I want to try to cover my eyebrows and draw them on.

You're a cutie pie! So glad you are healing up after your nearly lethal wrestling match. Utopia Planita must go on!
