Hi, I am always on the hunt for really good vegan and environmentally friendly yarns (Dyes, methods, etc) What are your favorites? Currently, I'm using a lot of Classic Elite's Verde Collection https://www.yarn.com/index.cfm/fuseacti ... 2242a6b9b/I'm also interested in Malabrigo's Organic Cotton http://www.yarn.com/webs-knitting-croch ... ic-cotton/I'd love to explore natural, plant-based fiber options outside of organic cotton: hemp, nettle, banana, bamboo, tencel, linen - duh - I already use a lot of linen. But I shy away from soy, corn (and obviously milk) fibers because I have food intolerances to those items and I am not certain of the effect of wearing them on my skin. It's probably inconsequential, but I'd rather not risk it. And I'm not the biggest fan of synthetics as they tend to be fossil-fuel derived. *unless you know of one that fits the criteria. Then, I'm all ears (and eyes, lol!) Help appreciated! Thanks!

I'd be happy to ship you some yarns so you can try them without having to buy. I think I have malabrigo organic cotton and I definitely have some bamboo yarn you can have. I have undyed organic cotton if you want it to and maybe other stuff... I don't remember.
I have boxes of yarn and I want to get rid of it (I'm downsizing my life). If you are interested, I can look and see what I have more specifically this weekend and you could take your pick.
As for where to get it now...I don't know. I haven't bought any in years, but the stuff I have is all still available (as far as I know).

Hey Pi, I just use cheap acrylic yarn (Red Heart Super Saver), but if there's any yarn you don't want and that MoniDew doesn't want I'd love to take some of that from you!

dakini... I have enough yarn for both of you! I have some nicer acrylics and acrylic blends in addition to lots of cotton and stuff. All vegan! All the yarns I have I bought "project" amounts, so it's not random balls here and there. pm me your address, any dislikes (color or fiber) and I'll put together a box for you... fair warning, I suck at the post office so it might take a couple of weeks.

wow! wow! wow!!!! what a deal!!! I'd be happy to take the natural fibers of all types, and allow Dakini to have the acrylics and synthetics. I'd happily pm you my address, if this is really a "go."

If you still have some left, I would be sooooooooo excited to test out some of those yarns too. ;-) I suck at post office too...I have a list of people I need to send gift packages to still, but if you make sure there's a return address on the package, I'll send you something back eventually :)

Okay, so I'm knew to the whole knitting thing... I've just done a couple of scarves with cheap yarn I've picked up from the craft store. I wanted to start some socks but when I went to the store it seems like everything labeled sock yarn has wool in it! boo!
Any suggestions for what I can use or links to online stores where I can pick up some vegan yarn for sock knitting? :)

There's actually tons and tons of vegan sock yarn. It drives me nuts actually, 'cuz i don't knit socks and wish there was more worsted and aran weights. Ravelry has a great search machine, which you can adjust for non animal materials and sizes. xo kittee

There's a whole blog post about vegan sock yarn that I found really helpful! http://veganknitting.typepad.com/vegan_ ... yarns.htmlAnd also a vegan sock group on ravelry! And Quo Vadis sells really pretty sock yarns on etsy. I really like the Crystal Palace sock yarns -- they have cotton, corn and bamboo blends, I think. Littleknits.com frequently has them on sale for 50-60% off. I haven't found too much variety at my LYS though. I've seen some crystal palace, sometimes Cascade (cotton), once I found bamboo, and at another place I found one brand of acrylic. Everything else is wool-a-riffic.

Any suggestions for super-bulky yarn? I have a request for a custom-order rug. It's for a friend, so I would like to keep the cost down, but still make sure I can get paid fairly since this will take a lot of time (she wants a 3.5'x5.5' rug!)

choirqueer, super bulky yarn is my favorite. I like Hometown USA by Lion Brand, Homespun Thick & Quick also by Lion Brand, and Red Heart's Light & Lofty. None of these are especially cheap so I'd load up on coupons before you go. Keep us posted on how your rug goes, I've been considering selling rugs on Etsy and have been studying patterns, but wow you're right, very time consuming.
