What do you use to waterproof a light weight coat for summer shower?

I once used latex house paint on a sail cover, and it worked well. Was considering using some latex on inside of jacket to waterproof it.

Not too sure of using that commercial fabric spray for waterproofing (not fond of aerosols) == don't want my lungs waterproofed.

Anyone have DIY inventions/formulas/suggestions for this?

What's the coat made out of? There is a waterproofing stuff they sell at some army surplus stores that you "wash" the garmet in and it works OK. It's like 10 bucks though. The aerosol stuff (Scotch-guard, etc) sucks anyway.
If it's cotton/natural fabric you can try making your own oiled duckcloth, google it and there are directions. It doesn't look hard (though messy) but I've never tried it. Though this works well for heavy fabrics. It was originally developed for sails on tall ships.

Fire makes everything tastier.

The aerosol stuff is terrible. Barely works and smells awful. I used it on a coat and it repelled the rain a bit for one rain shower. I couldn't wear the coat for a week after spraying it while the fumes aired out.

I don't have a good solution. I have a coat that came waterproof, but it has worn off and I wish I knew what I could do to re-waterproof it. It's a puffy coat (bought pre going vegan and will be worn until it's falling apart then replaced with a nice vegan coat).

I think I'm going to do one of my bags as a tester for the oiled duckcloth thing and then I have a jacket I'd like to do.
