Shabby style, upcycled from elements gleaned from antique stores, thrift shops, second-hand stores, etc. The sleeve were taken from curtains, the body is a tablecloth, and various embellishments from doilies and runners. Also, the various elements were dyed in tea, coffee, and get this: black beans. I have plans to guild the lily even more-so, if you can imagine. So this is just a tease. I'll post a full length, back and front, once I'm done.

I'd like to see the whole thing. With just the parts it reminds me of stuff my grandmother had in her house. And I do not mean that as an insult, my grandmother had a very well decorated home!

I intend to post full lengths, but I just don't feel quite "done" enough to do so now.... And, yeah... It is grandma stuff, but probably not being used the way grandma would have.

And, this, coming from me - I have 8 grandchildren, so far....

That lace is seriously gorgeous! I also really like that shade of green.

I was planning to when we get wedding photos done. Can you wait for about a month? He's getting married one month from today.

The dress is simply beautiful, a labour of love. I admire the creativity and talent that has gone into this - I look forward to viewing the post wedding photos.

Congratulations to your son (and to all of your family)! The dress is super cute. I'll be watching to see a picture of it worn.

My son is now a married man! And, I finally got the chance to wear the dress. These pics are taken from family cameras, so they're pretty bad (bad lighting, etc) It's still going to be a while before professional photographs are in. But I thought you all might like to see the dress being worn. So, here goes.

Image

This is me with my older son, who was an usher in his brother's wedding.

Image

Dancing with the groom. We all had a blast!

And with the youngest member of the family - my newest grandson. So sweet.

So, how do you think it turned out? Too crazy for an elegant wedding? (I'm literally wearing a tablecloth!) Or, does it work?

Wow!

I admit, I wasnt sold on it on the hangar (mostly because I have an aversion to lace, ruffles, ribbon etc), but it looks amazing on you. It came together to be so pretty and really suits you.

thank you, everybody! I tried to wear it with confidence, even if I felt a bit awkward wearing a tablecloth, haha! It was a fun project, too. I may actually try something like this again sometime. And, I hope I inspired some of you here to go out and do something completely crazy, just for fun.

It's lovely! I love how lace looks on some dresses (like yours!) and always want to make clothing with it. I've also been eyeing some gorgeous sari fabric at my local fabric store. I may just have to take the leap!

I love the idea of the sari fabric. Consider using contrasting colors and textures, which might make for some interesting results. I applied this concept for a previous year's wedding (my daughter's) by using Indian batik fabrics in contrasting colors. (My avatar photo is of me wearing that dress.) It looks funny on me while seated, but was stunning while standing.)

lol!! I don't sew often at all anymore. I think I save my sewing skills for when my children are getting married... which I certainly hope isn't terribly often. LOL! It's also become something of a family topic between my grandchildren and me.

My daughter is teaching her children to be what they call in their family "free fish." I guess I would say a free spirit. Follow your own path, be your own person - you get the idea. And that, for them, has always included the way they dress. They wear the funnest, cutest outfits you've ever seen! Including some combinations that are created from wildly unassociated items. Like, combat boots with a ballet dress, and a purple punk rocker wig.
Well, the grandkids all know what a free spirit I am on the inside (they have a vegan, pacifist grandma, in the middle of open-carry, gun-loving, meat-country USA.) But my clothing is typically so conservative that I am nearly invisible (blue jeans and t-shirts in greys and beiges.) They've pushed me to let out that creativity and dress on the outside the way I am on the inside - embracing global, ethnic, colorful, etc. I learned so much from them about being my true self that I'm really starting to allow other people to see me as I really am. And I feel so much freer about it than I ever thought I could.

You are NEVER too old to learn. Especially from your wise young grandchildren. I love those free-fishy kids!
