We've wanted to get our cats a cat tree for so long, but I've always thought they were hideous and I hate those carpet covered cat gyms. I was inspired by the really expensive, modern looking cat trees I've seen around the internet to create my own. I call it, "Basil and Cooper's Leisure Suite"

Image

I bought a simple a-frame, ladder style bookcase and drilled some holes in the 3rd shelf to stagger in a bit and make it a little more fun for the kitties to climb on.

Image

I turned the bottom shelf into a cat condo with removable screens, there's a faux-fur covered box inside for optimal napping. I wrapped one of the legs with rope for a scratching post. I also made them some hanging cat-nip filled toys.

Image

The fluffy bed on the second story loft is covered in faux-fur and is velcrod down so the cats don't slide around. The third shelf is covered in bits of carpet for more scratching! I covered the top story penthouse with faux fur.

Here are my kitties enjoying the view from the penthouse.

You totally should! My top recommendation is to have lots of scratching surfaces, I think I'm going to add some more carpet strips soon.

I love it! I actually bought a kitty condo (an ugly carpet-covered one--my living room is a kitty jungle gym!) just a couple of weeks ago and my kitty really loves it. I wish I'd thought to build one myself. I think it's an awesome idea and actually wouldn't be too difficult and could be done with scrap things. Definitely they love scratching surfaces, dangling things and perches. Good work!

Neat! I saw a video where someone made one out of a regular bookcase, but yours looks way better. I also found a tutorial on how to build your own like they sell in the stores, and at the end the guy said that even though it was a lot cheaper, the work wasn't worth it in the end because it was pretty involved.

Your kitten are so cute and they are so lucky to have you. They look like spoiled kittens.

Forget the cats, I want to play with it! I could do a little scratchin' about now.
