Hi PPK,

I hope one of you electronics savvy folks could answer this for me.

A very generous friend of ours recently gave us an HD smart tv, something that we couldn't possibly afford ourselves.

I would like to hook up my 6 year old run of the mill dvd player to it and the new tv does not have an RCA input. The guy at the electronics store said there is no such thing as an RCA to HDMI cable. I'd have to buy and amp or some other interim device or a whole new dvd player.....grrrrr! I can't afford either. Cheeses me off. I really only need the cable. Is there really no way to do this cheaply - like less than $25 cheaply, or did this guy not know what he was talking about?

Nope, there isn't.

HDMI is a digital signal. RCA is analog. You'd need some kind of convertor.

It looks like you can get a DVD player with HDMI for like 45 bucks, though:

...or 53 bucks:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 0ZX0TR9141

...or you may be able to find something at a local store or even Goodwill for $25 or under.

Either way, your old DVD player and your new TV aren't going to be friends. Sorry. :(

Poo!
Thanks solipsistination. Yeah, I figured a dvd player was the cheapest way to go. Ah well, looks like I'll have to watch dvds on my little old laptop for a while longer. Thank you for saving me a lot of time and frustration.

Depending on what your laptop has, you may be able to run a DVI -> HDMI cable into the TV and at least watch them bigscreen that way... 8)

What about buying a cable from the laptop to the tv. That ,should be much easier to do.

Except....I forgot that the DVD player in my laptop fried two years ago - installing a new DVD driver was not worth the cost. C'est la vie. The local Best Buy has a couple of DVD players suitable for my new fancy pants tv under $40, so I should be able to get one of those in a month or two.

In the meantime I might just pull out my old 90s tv( a great garbage picking find) and set it up next to the new one just for the DVD. This reminds me of back in the early 80s when people used to put there new TVs on top on the old wood console 70s one instead of buying a tv stand. Our kitty loved sleeping on top of the old tv, she'll be glad to see it back.

Thanks again for your help guys , it was much appreciated.
