This is driving me crazy. We don't know how my dad did it, and I have zero experience with tv stuff. My tv is only hooked up to an Apple TV.

This one goes through a sound bar and a cable box. The big issue is TV ears. Headphone things that I can't get to work with my Apple TV.

The TV is connected to the cable box via HDMI. An optical audio cable connects the sound bar. The TV ears connect to the cable box via RCA. The Apple TV only has an optical audio cable (I don't use that on mine because I just use the built in TV speakers).

The TV has a bunch of different connections. I have photos if that would help.

I think I figured that when they used the bluray player, my dad moved the ears RCA plug to the BluRay.

Things I tried:
-connecting tv ears to sound bar. Nothing happened.
-connecting tv ears to the tv and turning off the sound bar. Nothing happened.

The Apple TV works great through either tv or sound bar as long as the ears aren't involved. It's the stupid ears that are the problem. My mom needs them to watch tv at something below a deafening (for me) roar.

The first thing I would recommend is just making sure the TV ears work. So unplug everything, then cable box via HDMI to TV, TV ears via RCA on whatever audio-out is on the back of the TV. If that's a no-go, then I'd suspect something is up with the TV ears.

If it does work, then start adding stuff. I tend to try to make the TV where everything connects to so that I can independently remove stuff as needed. Does the TV do optical out? Then soundbar with optical out to TV. Does the TV have more than one HDMI? Then Apple TV via HDMI to TV.

Yeah they work when connected to the cable box via RCA, TV to sound bar via optical, and TV to cable box via HDMI.

They also work when the RCA is switched from cable to blueray.

They don't work direct to TV or sound bar, so clearly user error is as fault somewhere.

The tv ears only have an RCA out jack.

Let's see the back of the TV. Can we move everything off the cable box into the back of the TV?

http://www.tvears.ca/Installation_Guides.html I wonder if the installation guides on the TV ears might help, sorry if you've already checked there.

The cable box should be sending audio and video via HDMI, so the sound bar should be working off of the TV directly.

I didn't see that. I tried the audio plugs on the left.

I'll try connecting the sound bar direct to the tv.

Thanks. I'll give these a try tomorrow. Mom is watching Sochi now.

This stuff makes me feel so incompetent.

The plugs on the left are inputs for that VGA connector. It doesn't help that those plugs on the left aren't clearly labeled as inputs!

AV stuff is all weird and complicated. I'm half expecting plugging the sound bar into the optical out on the TV will somehow prevent the analog out from working, but hopefully it won't.
