dumb question of the month!

I've been taking my oatmeal to work in a glass jar to microwave with water when I get to work. Sometimes I do this with soup, too. The problem is the jar gets hot! If I crochet a cotton cover for the jar, can I put the whole thing in the microwave or will the cloth catch on fire or something?

i think i just answered my own question with this article

http://www.theguardian.com/uk/2007/jan/ ... insection1 "Microwave warning after dishcloth starts fire"

So, maybe I should just make myself a little pot holder that I can grab the jar with.

I can't say for sure, but would it be possible to just keep a potholder at work and use that to take the jar out of the microwave? I feel like if the cotton was on the jar in the microwave it would become hot, too.

edit: we posted about pot holders at the same time. : )

I put a dishcloth over stuff in the microwave all the time and I've never had a fire. If your jar has water in it, the moisture level in the microwave should be too high for a fire to start anyway.

And there's also those fabric bags filled with dried rice that people microwave to use as a heat pack.

Could you make a jar cozy and slip the jar in after you microwave the jar? You can do a matching cozy/pot holder set.
