Looking at that blanket (which is beautiful!) if she plans on using DK weight yarn my recommendation is Dreambaby DK by Plymouth Yarn - it's super soft and is very nice to work with, and is a comparable price to craft store yarns but a bit nicer quality.

Granted, I took my textile chemistry class 15 years ago, but this is a new one to me.

I'd also go for acrylic! It also has the (IMO) very significant advantage over wool of being much more easy to care for. You can machine-wash acrylic (for wool it would only work with superwash-treated yarn) and it is pretty durable, which might be especially useful for a baby item that has probably a higher chance of having something spilled on etc.

I do have to disagree on the acrylic not needing any blocking. Well, it does not NEED it but the fabric becomes so much nicer and more drapey if you steam-block it. The stitches will look a bit more regular, too. You do need the heat from an iron though, because the synthetic fiber has such different properties. Just make sure not to touch the fabric with the iron, just hover it an inch or so over it and let the hot steam do the work. From what I've gathered what happens is that you carefully and partly 'melt' the acrylic fibers - so if you overdo it you'll 'kill' it, meaning that it loses all elasticity and goes flat and kinda limp. Might be good for a shawl but not so much for a cushy blanket.

This post on the Acrylic Awesomeness thread on ravelry shows an example of how much of a difference blocking can make for acrylic:

Actually, that whole thread is pretty awesome for inspiration!

^^^ One of my favorite threads. Speaking of ravelry, what's everyone's usernames if you don't mind sharing? Would be fun to see what everyone is working on but not sure if there's an actual list somewhere. My username is samgo if you'd like to follow my yarny adventures, since posting pics here has proven too cumbersome.

Ack, I do but I don't use it! I mainly just stalk other people instead of posting stuff myself. Maybe I'll figure something out; I'm touched that you want to follow along with my work!

I will add you! I'm couroupita on ravelry. I haven't made anything in ages, but I hope to start knitting again soon.

Hmm... it never occurred to me that yarn isn't vegan. Sad. Luckily I haven't had to buy it since going vegan.

In the UK, Tiger occasionally does decent acrylic sock yarns for cheap. I got a couple of balls of 4ply variegated sock yarn and I am sure it came to three or four quid. It's knitting up nicely.
