I'm taking up knitting, and I'm wondering what y'all use for yarn. Obviously wool is out, what other yarns are soft and nice for scarves, socks and sweaters?

There are so many nice acrylics out there. I mostly use the big name brands like red heart, Caron, bernat.it really depends on what you're making. Vanna's choice is a good all purpose worsted weight yarn.

I am really enjoying Knit Picks Comfy (cotton/acrylic blend) and Knit Picks Billow (100% Cotton and SO SOFT). James C Brett Marble Chunky or DK is lovely and in some really neat colorways. I am also working on a scarf right now with soy yarn! It's not as soft as many of the cotton or acrylics I have but it is nice and I think it will be fairly warm.

Thanks, guys! I might go check out some of the brands you've mentioned at Michael's tomorrow on boxing day (If I care to brave the crowds).

Yay, another knitter - enjoy! And join ravelry if you haven't already, it's a really great resource!

I've used Berroco comfort for sweaters, which is a nylon/acrylic mix, and also lionbrand Heartland for some sweaters and chunkier shawls. Heartland has a nice warm feel to it but I've had good results with both.

I've only made one pair of standard socks, and used Berroco.Sock (nylon/acrylic again) but not enough color choices for me since I'd like more solids than what they offer. My aunt had made socks with a self striping yarn, Plymouth Yarn Diversity, which she has enjoyed using and is acrylic/polyester.

But you also can't go wrong with the box store acrylics like Vanna's choice, that and red heart are great for toys and blankets which I also like to do.

Good luck and happy knitting! :) if you've migrated to reddit maybe we should make a knit/crochet thread.
