Here's two picture of the dress (It's the blue lace one). I know for sure that I want it shortened to be above the knee. Other than that, I have no idea how I want it to look style-wise. I love that the lace shows my skin at the top and that's about it. Does anyone have any ideas or pictures of dresses that this dress could be changed into? I'm going to a very good tailor, but don't know what to tell him yet.

[babble edited out for easier understanding] Argh. My sewing vocab sucks today. I need more coffee. If you don't understand what I mean, please tell me so, and I'll rephrase (if necessary, with the help of a dictionary). I just thought it would look cool if you left the lace a bit longer than the opaque fabric underneath, so that it would show a bit of leg and match the look of the top.

I like the modification idea posted by AugustaBakery. Your Mom's wedding dress reminds me of the style the top of mine has, graffiti. I really loved mine (still do!) and would suggest that it is a great style for a wedding gown! As you can see, mine was totally sleeveless, so that is also an option with a lacey/meshy top neckline. Plus, it looks like you have great arms, so go for short! The only thing I would say, is in some of my photos I felt my sweetheart neckline (the solid part of the bodice, underneath the lace) was maybe a bit too low, as there is quite a bit of cleavage showing depending on the pose in the photos.

Someone else also suggested that to me, and I like the idea. So I'm going to see if the tailor can cut the sleeve's like Augusta's suggestion, leave the bottom like your suggestion, and maybe turn it into a sweetheart cut on top.

I too like the blue dress! I clearly couldn't pull it off to save my life but - is that your mom in the picture or you or . . .? Cause whoever that is rocks that dress.
Much cooler than my mom's pink wedding dress :D

Much cooler than my mom's pink wedding dress :D It's me! Valentine's ball. Thanks! So the tailor said he wasn't really up to the task of doing the dress. He used to make entire suits in the 70's and 80's, and now he's just looking for small jobs along those lines. I think he's just taking a break. Now, looks like I need to find a tailor who won't rip me off. Being only 2 miles away from the garment district, though, should make that easy.

So two things that are important to know that I realized when I put the dress on: 1) It has a serious drop waist...you can see it in the 2nd picture, that would look TERRIBLE or at least weird, if I shortened the dress to above the knee. So the waist needs to come up. Full length picture here: 2) It has hand-sewn beading along the bottom, around the neckline, and at the wrists. Along the bottom isn't a problem...the tailor can use a seam ripper and pull the whole skirt up from the middle. It's the neckline that I can't tamper with. And if I want to change the sleeves, i'll have to sacrifice the beading around the wrists: I think this style would work to save the most amount of beading and I could probably keep the pleats too!

Hey there! I don't know if you are still looking for ideas, but I just saw this alteration: http://abeautifulmess.typepad.com/my_we ... -lynn.html and immediately thought of your dress. There might be a way to still get the beading on an altered dress by maybe making a little ruffle of it at the bottom of the shorter sleeve and around the bottom layer of lace? Anyway I thought it was a really cute restyle and seemed similar to the dress you have. Good luck!

I AM still looking for suggestions because I'm trying to find the right tailor to take it to. I think I may have found a place...a new spot that opened up near downtown LA that sells vintage dresses that have been altered. They also offer alterations. Since they are very, very new, I think they may be excited to alter the dress (they could always feature a before/after shot on the internet to show off their skills) Thanks for your suggestion! I'm going to print all the pictures out and see which one they think is the best.

Bump for the finished product. It was only $25 to get it altered. I'm super pleased with the results and can't wait for a holiday party to wear it out!

Gorgeous! (and you are a total babe)
How awesome that you can wear your mom's wedding dress.
1strange: those are lovely wedding photos; you and your dress are beautiful and look made for each other. Love that sheer neckline.

It's gorgeous and you look amazing in it! I would love a dress like that in red.
