I'm considering making a zine about the intersection of veganism and diabetes. It would mostly be diabetic-friendly vegan recipes and advice for tweaking recipes to add more fiber and protein and/or lower carbohydrates. It seems like people often ask what to feed their family and friends who have diabetes. Is this something anyone would be interested in?

I would as well. Diabetes, Insulin Resistance, PCOS (I have this), etc are all interrelated and similar diets are helpful for all. So I think it could have a wider audience than you think.

Absolutely. A close friend of mine is diabetic, and I would love to have some safe recipes handy!

Definitely! My father is diabetic and I always cook vegan food for my parents when I come home. I would cook out of your zine and then freeze a bunch of stuff for them, so freezer friendly stuff would be very welcome.

Definitely interested - my Dad and my youngest brother both have Type 1, and whilst I don't see them heaps, it'd be awesome to have some references for good stuff to make for them when I cook for them.

I'd be interested, my Dad is diabetic and I'm being tested for it atm (thanks to my trigger finger diagnosis). My dad doesn't seem to get any decent advice on diet from the docs so it would be great to be able to give them some recipes for balanced meals. I probably don't have it but it's on both sides of the family so I really should sort my diet out some more anyhow.

Oh, trigger finger is no fun! I'm sorry.

My sister's vegetarian and type 1 diabetic, and we eat together at least once a week. I obviously cook her vegan food, so it would be pretty handy, because although I know the basics, I'd like to know more about how to not give her something that'll raise her blood sugar.

Folks, what are you looking for in a diabetic-friendly recipe? Low carb? Low fat? Low saturated fat? Low salt? Generally moderate? Desserts? Are carb counts on recipes really important to you?

My tests came back negative but I'm still interested in the zine because I would have sensitive blood sugar and would like to get some recipes for my parents. I'd personally be interested in heart friendly, simple recipes.

I'd be happy to help out doing carb counts. We have some pretty powerful nutrition software at my school that I could use. I also have multiple copies of the ADAs exchange list books that I could send you if you wanted to copy and include some stuff from that in it. although I'm sure you have all that stuff already or at least have it memorized.

I would! My father-in-law is diabetic, and he doesn't take care of himself anyway, but i'd still like to have ideas of what to make him for Father's Day and what not.

Something I would look for are sweet things. I don't know much about watching carbs or fats, though. I didn't realize people with diabetes had to track so many things. The person I know watches their sugar and prefers to not eat sweets. So alternatives to that would be good.
Also, I think basic info would be interesting. I think it was vegetalion who did a blog post during mofo about nightshade allergies which was really informative. So simple info about diabetes would be good just from a learning perspective.

Since many people with diabetes have high blood pressure or cholesterol or triglycerides, a lot of this is just regular heart-healthy diet stuff.

I might take you up on that. I was looking at boxes of soy milk yesterday realizing the carb count varies so much from brand to brand.

That would be awesome. I'm a type 1 diabetic, and I have to dose insulin based off the number of carbs in what I eat. And a lot of recipes out there are not low carb friendly.

Please make this zine! I am not diabetic but hypoglycemic and have had a helluvuh time adjusting my diet in the past few years. I can't speak to diabetic needs specifically, but I think I could definitely use this zine, and I want it to exist. In particular, I'd like to see:
1. travel-friendly recipes. at the airport, train station, etc, very often the only choices are bleached carbs, fruit (or very high sugar "fruit juice"), or nonvegan items. maybe some recipes that we can make the night before, let slosh around in our backpacks, and then eat at room temperature with a spork or fingers several hours later.

2. bearing in mind the use of soy or highly processed foods. i try hard to avoid all the processed stuff that is (understandably) so popular in our vegan world.

thanks! please let us know about your progress!
