I think it's fine. They make cool decorations, and it's nice to appreciate the beauty of nature. My aunt has a big old wasp nest on a stick hanging from her ceiling. It's one of the coolest decorations i've seen.

I can't bring myself to pick up anything like feathers, shells etc., and yet I don't actually see harm in them as long as they're discarded naturally, and have no use for other animals. But some part of me still goes 'ewww, not vegan!' when I see a pretty shell and think about picking it up! ???

I would. I think with most fossils the tissue has been replaced with minerals anyway so it's not like a body, it's rock. Plus they're millions of years old. Like with feathers or shells I feel like if I decorate with them guests might not know they were found items and didn't come from a plucked bird or purposely dessicated sea animals (like sea stars, sand dollars, shells, etc). You don't have that problem with fossils.

The only problem I have with decorating with fossils is when people carve out areas of natural beauty to bring a chunk of rock home with them, ruining the site (like gouging chunks out of a rock face or removing pieces from the petrified forest in AZ). But if it's like a rock found on the beach, no biggie.

Can we talk about how much I want something made of mastadon ivory? Because it's forking MASTADON, how awesome is that? Mammoth ivory is cool but not as cool. Are there problems I'm not thinking of? Is it glamorizing ivory in general? I don't know.
