changing y.r to your only makes the people who use it correctly as a widely accepted abbreviation of year look stupid. it also completely hides the stupidness of people who use it for "your"
i would much rather enjoy reading an oblivious texter's sentence with year replacing what they meant to be your than the majority of the instances which were meant to mean year.
don't punish the people who are using it correctly! punish the people who are using it incorrectly.
thank you.
p.s. year doin it rong!
you're welcome.

Or, hear me out...people can take the time to type two extra keys and just spell year.

As someone who types for a living, I don't see saving two keystrokes on the much more commonly used word as particularly stupid.

do you expect people to type doctor or miss or mister? using your. (for year) isn't laziness. it's been around for (what?) centuries? at least many many more decades than people have been using it to abbreviate "your".
(on the upside, it does make people who intended it to replace "you're" still look stupid.)
p.s. thanks, eppy, for having my back. i figured this'd have irked more people than have commented in support. i guess i'm just a natural proofreader. (now if only i could get a job as a proofreader without having any degree in one of the language arts.)

I think you misunderstand me.
The only reason we have an abbreviation for year is because gravestone engravers and archivists wanted to make their jobs easier. So they invented an abbreviation and started using it. Lexicographers noticed this and put it in a book. Then teachers taught from the book as if it were the word of God. But it's not. It's the word of gravestone engravers and archivists.
Some day soon, if not already, lexicographers will put the same two letters in a book and say it's also an abbreviation for your because of the texters. There's nothing stupid about it. Texters are just saving themselves a little energy in the same way the gravestone engravers and archivists were.
Neither is more legitimate than the other.

But didn't God write on stone tablets or something? I think you may have just proven that god is a gravestone engraver. Or something.

aah! ok.
(but you have to admit that on a forum [where people might or might not be typing on their phones, i concede] that using your for year is more widely stumbled upon than it is for your... and that we should honor that and try to make those instances less jarring than those who much more rarely use it for your.)
in similar but other words, i'm not saying the word year is more commonly used than the word your, i'm saying the abbreviation is far more linked to year than it is to your.
and because kelly misread my feelings (they sure get lost without intonation) i am very rarely angry. i am not angry in this thread. i wasn't angry earlier. i'm just making a case with logic. i apologize if my directness sounds curt, but i'm just an introvert who doesn't use flowery language, and my "jokes" are often taken the wrong way. (and i never learn from those situations.)

Saying that your fictional five year old could filter better than the PPK is not a logical argument. It appears to be an attempt at humor. In either case, it is not a very effective way to ask the moderators to do what you want them to do.

it was an example of the use of the filter! i couldn't think of a different topical way to use "year" in the context of the thread!

if i've wronged one of you, please let me know, and i will go away. (i don't want to leave the PPK, but if my presence causes stress, then i understand and will leave in peace.)
(i just don't understand why my logical case is being resisted so. it feels personal.)

Neither is more legitimate than the other. So y'r is filtered into year for texters? If so, than why i.m.h.o is filtered into imho? Filtering an abbreviation into the correct text seems so un-ppk?

There's no personal vendetta against you, SC, and certainly no one is trying to get you to leave PPK. It's just that the way you presented your case was kind of insulting, so you got responses in kind. If you want to ask people a favor, telling them a 5 year old could do a better job than them and that they are being illogical isn't the best way to go about getting what you want, you know? Remember that the mods are volunteers, and particularly with the new forum software, some changes and things take a while and can be a pain in the asparagus, so just ask nicely next time, okay? Thankee!

my terrible joke was mostly in response to MBM's "wha?" (i assumed she could take the joke. and most of you know i don't want kids, so i thought it would never have been taken seriously.)
and i apologize for using the words "logic and logical." the resistance felt super personal. i was never saying people were being illogical. i was referring to the existence of the filter. the filter itself would make spock cry.

This thread makes me feel old because I have no idea what you folks are talking about (other than the Epps-splanation about engravers and archivists, which is perfectly clear to me). I need to cross-reference this thread now into the "things that make you feel old" thread.

I was just joking back with you. I think you are taking this all a little too seriously.
Sorry, I don't do the filter stuff so I can't help with your issue.

this thread needs some poetic relief
As the New Y.R approaches men swear That they’ll have a real hot love-affair. But the girls that they meet In the bar, on the street, Say ‘We’re sorry! Y.R asparagus aint got enough hair!’
thanks to the internet limerick club and to a certain furry-loving PPKer

aah. see, unless i know the person really well, it's super tough to tell whether a joke reprimand is real or not when it comes from an actual mod/site owner etc.
that's why i avoid doing it on my own turf.
sometimes i wonder if i have aspergers or something.
::edit:: thanks torque. :-)
