i was a pretty bad vegetarian and would occasionally eat seafood back in the day. nothing is better than a tuna sub from a pizza place. yum yum yum
that was probably the hardest thing for me to give up when going vegan.
just now im finally trying a vegan "tuna" salad made out of chickpeas. i made the recipe from happy herbivore. (well i made a version of it. i dont have kelp powder or relish)
dang that is good stuff! i like that she puts soy sauce in it. adds an interesting kick i would have never thought of.
any other good tuna salad recipes out there? i feel like in one of my other cookbooks there is one called "Tu-No" but i cant remember if its in AFR or Vegan Table.
yum yum yum

The Better Than Tuna Salad from The Vegan Table is amazing. It's also chickpea-based; I make it and eat it for lunch for days.

I got one at the local co-op. Wish I had the recipe - it's a tunaless tempeh salad. It had tempeh, vegenaise, dill pickle, onion, mustard and some other ingredients and tasted awesome.

I use mashed chickpeas, veganaise, onion, celery, black pepper, paprika, garlic powder, and dill. Sometimes I use sweet red peppers instead of celery.

mmm, yes, I do it like Desdemona does! Ahem. It's perfect and I love to add crumbled nori as it adds a real "fishy" taste.

The tempeh salad from Vegan Comfort Food is my favorite. It also has relish and nori in it.

My favourite is made with grated jicama - if you squeeze out the extra water after grating, it has the most tuna-like texture ever! Then I just kind of use whatever sounds good - Vegenaise, a bit of nori, some vinegar, etc, sort of like the VWAV chickpea-hijiki salad, but with jicama instead of chickpeas. Super delicious.

Have you tried the VWaV tofu dill salad? It's not trying to be tuna or anything and there is no fishy taste, but it's really fresh and yummy tasting.
The lightness and freshness have me making it more often than the tuna salad types. I love it on a lightly toasted roll with red onion, crisp lettuce, and a slice of Tofutti cheeze. I've also been known to just eat it out of the bowl on crackers.
As a bonus, it takes about 5 minutes to make and has a super short list of ingredients. Now that I can get the reduced fat Vegenaise, I make it at least once a month.

Speaking of this post, I went to my co-op today (not the one i posted about earlier) and they had "Tempeh of the Sea". It's so yummy! I think it's just mashed up tempeh, vegenaise, minced red onion, pickle relish, salt and pepper.
