I just moved into a super tiny kitchen with one cabinet (corner unit that is giant but has a tiny door and loads of inaccessible space), leaving me without a storage solution for those dark dry loving suckers I like to keep stocked.
How do you guys store these fine staples?

I just have my garlic and onions in a bowl on the counter (we use them up quickly so that's never been a problem), and my potatoes are either in the fridge (baby potatoes) or for russets I have a cotton bag that I keep in a dark cupboard.

I do the same - I have onions and garlic in a bowl on top of my microwave (also in the bowl: lemons, limes, shallots, avocados, etc.) and the potatoes are in a random cabinet underneath.

Garlic and onions in a basket on the counter, and potatoes in a separate basket.

I have a garlic keeper for my garlic, it's an unglazed terra cotta pot that syas "garlic" on the front, from Wal-Mart, on the top/back of my stove...\I know the stovetop isn't ideal, biut it stays dry in the pot, so, it balances out. Onions I hang the mesh bag they come in when you buy them by the bag, from a hook on the wall behind the door in a dark hall at the top of the basement staircase. Potatoes also behind that same door, but on the floor of the stair landing and I leave them in their bag. Or, even better , if my Dad gives me his purple garden potatoes, same thing, but he puts them in huge burlap sacks that are better than the clear plastic bags the grocery store ones have.

Can you keep them in an opaque paper or cotton bag? That's what I would do.

You are supposed to keep onions and potatos apart right? I just read that somewhere. I keep both my onions and potatos on the same bottom shelf of my pantry. Maybe this is why they seem to go bad quicker than I think they should...hmmmm....

Even though I was told not to, I keep all three in vegetable crisper. It works for me.

I had to start keeping mine in the fridge. They were going bad too quicky in my pantry. I think it could be the sea air. When I lived elsewhere, I kept them in plastic bins in my coat closet.

Like others, I keep onions and garlic in a bowl on the counter (although I recently broke the bowl, so now the garlic is in a small separate bowl and the onions in the remaining half of the old bowl (more like a soup plate) until I get a new one). I rarely buy potatoes, but when I do, I keep them in the crisper.

Small (by European capital city standards) kitchen here too. I keep my onions, garlic, and spuds in the 'fruit' bowl on my table in the sitting room. Clears up space in the kitchen, creates a talking/mocking point for new visitors.

I've got these vintage flour/tea/other stuff canisters on my counter and my garlic lives in the 'rice' one. It's always kept really well, but I'm not sure if that's because it's a good spot or because I go through those five-packs of garlic really fast. Onions live in my fruit bowl, and I just buy potatoes as I need them because I can't seem to store them anywhere without them going green or growing tentacles the next day.

Garlic and onions in a bowl on my counter. Potatoes are kept in a clothes basket in a dark corner with other various foods like rice, popcorn, flours, and sugars.

Garlic and onions on the kitchen table in a bowl, potatoes in a drawer. We have never had a kitchen with a free drawer before this, so I used to keep potatoes in a hanging fruit basket.
Garlic pretty much always sprouts in my kitchen but I just cut the green germ out before I use it. Hasn't killed me yet!

I have this trio of hanging mesh baskets. They are connected by chains and go small, medium, large, like a wedding cake. It is hanging in the corner farthest from windows, and is partially shaded by a buffet/cabinet, but they aren't completely in the dark. They do get lots of air flow this way though, which I think is important, and they occupy an otherwise unusable space in the kitchen. I used to keep the garlic in the top little basket, onions in the middle medium, and potatoes on the bottom, but we use so many more onions than potatoes, so I reversed those two. Sweet potatoes and small winter squash sometimes also get in the hanging baskets.

Each in a plastic bag inside a large drawer under the counter. My potatoes and onions sprout pretty often but that's also because I don't use them so fast.

I'd think keeping them in a plastic bag might make them sprout sooner, as it traps the moisture in, but I could be wrong.

I keep garlic and onions on a shelf in my food cupboard. My mum has an unglazed terracotta pot with air holes in where she keeps her garlic. Rarely buy potatoes as someone I live with is allergic to them, and if I'm not using them immediately I tend to stick them in the cupboard too. I usually buy washed potatoes, but the potatoes that still have a bit of earth on keep much better. I wouldn't stick them straight on the shelf though, would need a bag or bowl!

I have a wire cart with two drawers. I keep potatoes in two dark cloth bags in the drawers. One for russet and one for sweet. I keep garlic in a small cotton bag in a wire basket on top of my bakers rack. Both shelves are in my dining room which the window is covered with light canceling curtains because it too hot without them.

We keep ours in a 3-tiered hanging basket dealy, since we have very limited counter and pantry space. It's not in the dark, but we use potatoes, onions and garlic so quickly that it doesn't really matter.
