My good friend-new vegan just asked me for a good high iron breakfast bar. I assume he wants to buy them but he is down for recipes too. He has a severe anemia problem and requires lots of iron daily. Thanks!

sunflower and pumpkin seeds, pine nuts, molasses, dried apricots and quinoa are all high in iron. I bet they could be combined into something somehow.
If he has a severe problem, I hope he is taking supplements and working with a doctor. "Severe" implies that he can't absorb it properly so he can eat nothing but iron rich foods 24/7 and still not get much.
It also helps if you aren't a dodo head like me and idiotic drink a soy latte after taking iron.

Ya - he has been to a few doctors who finally found out his problems were due to iron levels. He is doing better but is trying to get lots of iron still.
I think I am going to find him a bunch of recipes with the ingredients you mentioned and make a lil booklet for him! :)

besides from taking an iron supplement, i have been munching on raisins and pumpkin seeds. and i cut back on coffee A LOT. i bet a quinoa/dried fruit/molasses/pumpkin seed bar with some agave would be pretty epic. maybe adding some roasted hazelnuts would make it even better..

I'm sure he already knows this, but consuming vitamin C with your iron helps you to absorb the iron. So maybe he can add a high in C dried fruit to those bars or drink a glass of OJ with it.

I think anemia mines must be iron mines that have been stripped of all their iron.
