I bought Ito-wakame dried seaweed specifically because it gave me a seaweed salad recipe on the back which I love but have never made myself. Asian groceries sell this in large packs so I have a huge pack of this btw. If I can't get rid of the smell I don't what I will do with it there is only so much mock tuna one could eat.

The vinegar/sesame/soy dressing is good. I just can't deal with the fishy smell and taste it's producing (ironically). I know it's not uncommon as I have seen posts on the internet about this (without solutions) Is there some secret to this? I was truly looking forward to eating this dish more often rather paying $4-5 for a tiny dish of this at an Asian restaurant.

Seaweed doesn't smell like fish - it smells like the sea. You can't really get rid of the aroma, but some seaweeds have a stronger scent than others. I find wakame to be one of the more sea-smelling veggies.

So I guess I won't buy that anymore. The sea water I've been around doesn't smell that strong. So if anyone knows the mildest best type to use a for seaweed salad please post it. Thanks!

Try arame! It's much milder, and really delicious.

Tell me more about arami. I despise Wakame but I think nori is a weird substitute sometimes.

Arame is so good! The flavour is quite mild, and the texture is really nice - it's got a firm bite to it, not mushy or slimy. Crowderpea is right. It's awesome with carrots. You can cut them matchstick-style and cook them with a little drizzle of soy sauce and mirin. Super simple, and it's really healthy.
