I think a lot of people have this allergy but aren't as sensitive to ripeness as you two say. I really prefer the least ripe possible, with still a good amount of green, and so because of this, I have gone a little overboard before and tried once to eat a pretty much all green banana... And yeah, not only was it thouroughly nasty, I got this allergy-mouth sensation. I bet it would happen to most people if they ate a green one.

Dare I experiment?

Yes, but they aren't as annoying as my mold, ragweed, and animal allergies most of the time.

Ragweed allergies are pollen allergies! Something like 50% of people with ragweed allergy have an oral allergy to green bananas! For example, me! I do! Also, tomatoes, eggplant, pineapple, and walnuts.

It makes sense that a ragweed allergy is a pollen allergy, but I had no idea that so many ragweed allergic people also had an oral allergy to banana. I didn't even know it was possible to have an oral allergy. Now I can tell the people who are worried that I will go into shock next time I eat a banana to chill out! I'm all about doing things for science, but the itchy, bumpy, swollen lips are really uncomfortable. I'm going to have to work up some nerve to do this one.
