wondering if any of y'all know of a substitute for dulse (besides nori or sea vegetable flakes).

in the near future, i would like to make Chesapeake Chickpea Sandwiches (robin's vegan version of a crab cake sandwich from quick fix vegan on page 105) but i do not have dulse (or nori or sea veg flakes). and i've come across some a couple of other recipes in other cookbooks that call for dulse (or something simliar) too.

i saw dulse flakes (packaged in a large bag) at Earth Fare last night but I think it was about $6.99. the recipe only calls for a tsp and i don't need a huge pre-packaged bag of it. did not see any dulse (or nori or sea veg flakes) in the bulk bins. i did however see kelp powder and spirulina (sea product???) in the bulk spice bins. not sure if either of those would work.

next time i'm at Earth Fare I will look more carefully to see if I see any small shakers of dulse or sea veg flakes, but I only saw large pre-packaged bags (similar to bob's red mill stuff but not as large)

anyone have any ideas for me?

I have a similar problem; I've never seen dulse being sold here in Germany. The only seaweeds I have access to are nori, wakame, hijiki, kombu and aonori. Which of those would be most similar to dulse?

nori or wakame, i would think. kombu is a big tough seaweed that's usually used for stocks, and hijiki has a rope-like texture that i'm not too fond of. i've never heard of aonori.

can i buy a nori sushi sheet and crumble it up? is that sorta like dulse??

i haven't actually used dulse, so i don't know the flavor nuances it has, but i think crumbled nori sheets would be fine!

I would say nori and dulse have very different flavours. Different textures too. I do know that small shakers of dulse exist. I'd probably look for that before experimenting otherwise.

i'm not sure if they're similar in taste, but we do this a bunch and it works well in recipes that call for dulse. we pulse up a 1/4 of a sheet of nori in the food processor or blender and go from there!

okay.... i think i finally found dulse flakes?? is this it??? the only ingredient in the dulse granule container is organic dulse, nothing else.

yup! i use those kelp granules for my chickpea salad and for isa's tempeh crab cakes!

i obviously have never used either one. is there much of a flavor/smell different between the kelp and the dulse???

(too bad i've already left the store, oh well, i can pick them up another time, glad i found them finally!!!!)
