Whoa, vegan roadkill. Congratulations!
Last summer I found three pounds of prunes scattered across the road and sidewalk behind our apartment. Picked them all up, washed them and ate. They were delicious, very ripe. In fact, I couldn't eat them all, so I made a double batch of Isa's prune brownies to share with my in-laws. The whole family enjoyed our sidewalk harvest.

I made and froze black beans a few months ago. I pulled them out of the freezer and put them in the fridge a week ago. I forgot about them until today... My general rule is 1 week in the fridge maximum..
Do I have to throw them out?

An unopened tetra pack of soy culinary cream with a best before date of 28 November 2011?
BTW, I love the idea of vegan roadkill!

I'd definitely eat the soy cream. If you're not sure about it, just pour a little bit into a spoon, smell and taste. That stuff lasts forever.

A block of firm tofu that has faint yellow streaks in it? The tofu isn't due to officially expire for another week.

I have an unopened pouch of raw carob powder that expired over two years ago in my pantry. I'm scared to open it. It looks fine from the outside, and it is probably still edible, but I can't bring myself to open it after all this time. Just in case it'll kill me, perhaps.

If it was unopened, probably it's fine. the question is, it tastes like shiitake when it's fresh, so what are you going to do with it?? (can you tell i have half a kilo in my cabinet and don't know what to do with it? it was pricey, so i hate to toss it.)

I agree. At least I wouldn't eat that. What about an unopened package of tempeh that expired 17/02/2012?

Okay, I think they're called hyphae, but they're totally like tentacles. Love Child wrote: What about an unopened package of tempeh that expired 17/02/2012? Sounds okay to me. Carton of almond milk I took out for coffee this morning, then left sitting on the counter with the spout up all day while I was gone (almost 8 hours).

ooooh listen re RAW CAROB POWDER:
so, my cars been broken for a week and i live 8 miles from town....only way to get there was hitchhiking and i wasnt up for it. so ive been scrounging my cupboards for the week. the other night, i wanted something sweet. and i wanted hot chocolate. alas i had no chocolate
what i ended up with was this: a can of coconut milk with the liquid poured down the sink, a glob of blackstrap molasses, a bit of vanilla, and RAW CAROB POWDER. i might have added boiling water too to think it, i forget. anyway, heated all that on the stove and mixed until smooth. It was just OK hot, not great. but later, i went to drink the rest of what was in the pan, and BUTTERSCOTCH. it SO tasted like butterscotch. a bit grainy from the raw carob powder, but i bet theres the makings of a butterscotch frosting here or something
so, coconut milk + blackstrap molasses+vanilla extract+ raw carob powder = BUTTERSCOTCH!
i wish i HAD more raw carob powder :/ mines gone now ( haha it was like 2 or 3 or more years old though, not kidding....i didnt find a great purpose for it previously either lol) and we cant even GET it in this country. the roasted one is nasty.

It should have a nutty smell and not too much fermented-ness.

I can never find a definitive answer for this-how long does tamarind concentrate last in the fridge? It has no expiration date and has been in there for at least a year and a half. Should I toss it and get more?

I'd use it, as long as it's not moldy or weird looking. It's pretty acidic, so it keeps really wel. I've had my tamarind in the fridge for over a year now, and it still looks and tastes the same as when I first opened the jar.

Normally that's reassuring but after this long it kind of freaks me out, like it's trying to trick me or something. I'll stick with it, though.

1) Does anyone know how long braggs apple cider vinegar is good for once you open it & keep it in the fridge? 2) I forgot when I bought it. How can you tell when vinegar is bad? It already looks weird with all that 'mother' in it. 3) i always see gray spots on the cauliflower at the store so I'm afraid to buy it. Does anyone know what's up with that?
