i dunno, it's not moldy at all? my applesauce goes moldy fast, but if yours isn't, taste it and keep it if it's ok!

No mold. It looks and smells fine! Which seems weird because it's organic/no sugar added. Normally I live on the edge in terms of food safety and so far haven't suffered for it, but it just seems like a LONG time for applesauce. I might still freeze it and use it for baking. That would kill anything that might have grown in there, right?

Freezing doesn't kill anything, it just inhibits further growth. I would say toss it. There isn't anything special in applesauce to make it last more than a week or so in the fridge. You don't want an off flavor in all your baked goods anyway.

That makes me sad, but is probably good advice. I really hate to waste food. It makes me feel like a failure.

I know, it sucks. I have taken to writing dates on things with a sharpie. Not sure if it is helping prevent wasted food yet, but it seems like it helps remind me to use things up.

Haha, moldy applesauce is my pet peeve! It always seems to get moldy right when I need it. If it were me, I'd give it a taste and if it tastes fine I'd use it. I've had unsweetened, preservative-free applesauce stay good for over a month at a time (I only use it for baking). The rate at which it gets moldy (in my case) seems dependent on how far back in the fridge it is and how many times it's been opened.

Freezing it in small chunks for future use is a great idea. It's like the tomato paste thing I learned on the ppk...and I feel so dumb for not thinking of it myself!

Well, it has been in the back of the fridge!

I have a bunch of tiny little 1/2 cup tupperwares from ikea that are perfect freezing stuff like applesauce. I need more of those because it seems like they're always being occupied by hummus or something.

If there is no mold on it, I'd taste a tiny smidge and use it.

I have two cans of jackfruit in my pantry that have an expiration date some time in 2011. I should probably toss these, right? The cans look fine.

How long do people think that Mori-nu shelf stable silken tofu is good past its sell by? I've got some from mid-2011...

torque I like that article. I think I'd feel icky about eating something 5 years past its sell-by though. I dunno. I have a couple of shelf stable things (fruit as well as the above mentioned tofu) that are just getting more and more past and I should either eat them or chuck them.

From what I can tell on google, 1 week is the limit for pumpkin. So use it up today!

I've used mori-nu at least a year past its best before and it was fine...

I cooked dried chickpeas yesterday so I could use them today, and I left them out on the stove in the water they cooked in. Would you eat it or not?

Depends on the climate where you live, but if they don't smell or taste funky, I'd eat them. Rinse off the water and heat them well before use if you're worried.

Left out overnight after cooking? I wouldn't risk it--2 hours is my limit.

It's southern US - it was like 70 yesterday and it'll be that again today. I did immediately rinse them and stick them in the fridge while I decided.

bean - yeah I was kind of thinking that. SIGH.

I hope this works out for you, but for future reference you can't taste food poisoning bacteria.

I'd eat the chickpeas. I don't think it's at all likely things will go from being dried, soaked and then boiled for over an hour to causing food poisoning after less than 24 hours. (I do realise you already ate them, I'm just chiming in that I don't think it was that risky).
