i thought of this thread some weeks ago at a church lunch where there was this awesome salad with ramen noodles and almond slices and stuff and it was [ostensibly] vegan, and i'm so classy that i LOVE to eat raw ramen noodles, so i took a big bite and either the nuts were rancid or the noodles were rancid and i didn't spit it out but i was really skeeved out and then thought for the next twelve hours not only would i be squirting from both ends, but everyone else would be too but i didn't want to be the food safety freak running around shrieking about how the food was spoiled. so i let us all die of aflatoxin poisoning. actually, no, we all were just fine, but that shiitake was rancid.
ppk i love you, i may not be here every day but i think of you every day....

I think I put rancid tahini in a salad dressing yesterday, but the dressing was SO GOOD (and overpowered by garlic) so we ate it anyway. And I will eat it again today. Hopefully I will not die.

Well crepe. I just discovered that my fridge was left open a crack last night (hottest day of the year). The thermometer I keep in there reads 12C (53.6F). The door would have been ajar for more than 12 hours (although I don't know how long it took to get to that temp). Luckily I don't have too much in there that could go bad. (Lots of stuff like relish/jam/mustard/hot sauce I'm not worried about and the soy milk is in a tetra pak that I hadn't opened yet.)

A few items I'm wondering about:

- an opened pack of shiro miso,
- a bowl of homemade tomato/avacado salsa (made with olive oil, lemon juice, and balsamic vinegar),
- unopened snack packs of soy yogurt,
- dressing made of tahini, miso, lemon/lime juice, nooch and water (made last night)
- and leftover slices of marinated, fried tofu.

I was hoping to have the tofu in a pita with the salsa and tahini sauce for dinner later. Should I risk it or toss it?

ETA, the iced tea I took out of there feels cool enough, but then again, in this heat, anything would feel cool in comparison to the ambient temp.

Those are all sealed, fermented, salty and/or sour foods that don't spoil very fast (except for the tofu maybe?). I would definitely eat those. Then again, I am a bit gross.

If the tahini was rancid, it would taste horrible but wouldn't kill you.

I've got some Phyllo dough in the freezer and it expired in April.... 2011. Am I crazy for even considering the edible~ness? It's in sealed packages so I want to say go for it but.....

I froze soup and the lid popped off during the freezing process. So unsealed frozen soup aye or nay?

Frozen food doesn't really need to be sealed for food safety purposes. The temperature is what keeps bacteria from growing in your food. Covering the food is more to keep things from drying out, and to keep from making a mess. I would just replace the lid and proceed as normal.

Should be safe, but it may be pretty dried out and disastrous to handle especially if you have a self defrosting freezer. I would thaw it and see what it's like before you make any big plans for it.

Probably safe but might taste funny on the top due to absorbing flavors. My mom gave me an excellent tip for this once - before you thaw it, run some warm water into it, swish it around, and dump it out. It will melt the very top layer of soup ice where the worst of the absorbed flavors are and then they get poured out with the water. Just, uh, remember to do it BEFORE thawing.

I've done that with beans. I ate them, and survived. But your mileage may vary

I will normally eat anything but I'm unsure whether to open and eat a pack of Tofurky slices with an eat by date of March 2013. I can't see any mould... What say you PPK?!

I have gotten risk averse about food poisoning, and I'd toss it. Mostly because I would then spend the rest of my day wondering if the tummy stuff was about to kick in, which would ruin my fun.

I'd probably eat old tofurkey slices. They definitely get weird and moldy when they've gone bad after opening the package. I assume that places put a way earlier date on stuff than necessary as a cover their asparagus move so I mostly ignore dates.

I usually ignore dates too! I only bought them in May / June so they must've been sold to me like that... I think I'll probably open them and eat 'em if they don't smell weird. Sorry T'lish!!

Is it a closed container? Probably okay if there is no mold on it. Look > smell > taste > eat :-)

Unsealed ice cream? It's Almond Dream, not the kind I usually get (my mom got it for me) but the container is not sealed. Is that normal for Almond Dream or is someone trying to poison me?
