Those beans are probably just fine, especially after you cook them.

I've just boiled some cashews to make the feta from Lisa Does It, and there was a weird purple greyish foam in the middle of the pan... I've never boiled cashews before is this normal?! googling hasn't helped!

Probably fine. Things that have protein can get foamy when you boil them, like beans do.

Tofu / broccoli / red pepper stir fry, left on the counter for 24 hours after I forgot to put it in the fridge.

Looks ok... I think I'm going to go for it.

Cooked food, on the counter for 24 hours? Yeah, I wouldn't. That's pretty much asking for it right there.

I noticed that my two packages of extra-firm tofu had a best-by date of today. I looked at them, saw no signs of spoilage, then chucked them in the freezer. Will that save them?

I'd eat it. The last tofu I bought was on clearance at the store because they had reached the best-by and I froze them too.

I don't know, I very often leave leftover food out overnight to cool down before freezing it in the morning, always been fine. I figure that the food at the deli if you buy it at closing time has also been out on the counter the whole day and it's not usually refrigerated.

Yea, not sure how wise it was, but I ate it and survived.

I think the riskiest part was the red peppers, since they're soft enough to go bad quickly. The broccoli was roasted, maybe over-roasted, and the tofu was pretty firm, so I don't think those were too risky. I re-cooked it, to be a little safer.

Yeah, I eat that sort of stuff all the time too. I know it's not recommended, but I never any experience adverse affects either. Can't do it in summer though. Stuff can go noticeably putrid overnight in juli and august here, so I guess climate is a big factor.

If I leave something out over night (so, 8 hours or less) I might pop it in the fridge to salvage the leftovers. Any more than that? No.

Yep. I'd sniff it first just to make sure it wasn't rancid, but if not, I'd eat it.

I ate a Clif Builder bar I found at the bottom of my desk drawer this morning thinking the BB date was August of this year but in fact it was August 2013. I think I will be okay.

So I want to make pesto pasta for when my friend visits tomorrow. The pesto will have fresh rocket, basil and spinach. As a teen I took a course in food safety, and I remember reading that you shouldn't keep food with fresh, uncooked herbs for more than three hours. Does anyone know why? And how likely would I be to poison my friend with basil pesto if I prep the pesto this evening and serve it tomorrow afternoon?

I have done food safety courses and have never heard that. Herbs are pretty similar to leafy greens (esp basil) so I don't think it would be an issue. Keep it in the fridge of course , as you would with salad, but I can't see how it would become poisonous.

I would think the 3 hours would be at room temperature. You wouldn't want to keep pasta at room temp that long anyway. In the fridge, herbs are good for a few days (3-5ish).

I just bought freshly made corn tortillas at my local gluten-free store last night. When I came downstairs this morning, they were still sitting on the counter. Oops! They had been refrigerated at the store... still good?? It was like 12hrs room temp

Corn tortillas should be fine, they're frequently sold unrefrigerated. As long as they're not moldy (which I doubt would happen in that span of time) you're good.
