Should I label them vegan or not?

If I do, then vegans and the vegan-wise will know they can enjoy them. But, non-vegans might go, ooh, there's probably broccoli and tofu in them and they may not sell.

yeah, it's a tough call! i've done it before by putting a v in a circle next to the name of the baked good and maybe writing dairy and egg free, so vegans will know, but it won't freak out others.

I agree with IJDI. I'd say egg and dairy free. That way the people who freak out at the word vegan probably just assume you use egg whites ans skim milk.

I would label it. I was thrilled to find vegan baked goods at a couple of craft shows I did last year at churches that were also doing bake fundraisers on the same day. I thought there wouldn't be anything but there were vegan scones and muffins. made my day.

Also noted: this was not a vegan gathering at all and they both were selling well because I went back for more scones and they were gone.

I think this is a perfect solution.

You could divide them in half and put them at opposite ends of the table so it's not obvious. Label one plate "vegan chocolate chip cookies" and the other plate just "chocolate chip cookies" (or whatever it is you make).

I think dairy and egg free would be a good solution, since many people who are not vegetarian follow dairy- or egg-free diets. Maybe with a v in a circle as well, as most people wouldn't know what that means.

I would make a sign that says vegan, dairy, and egg free treats available! please ask! and then when someone asks, point out the delicious cookies. I think I'd be equally likely to avoid something that said dairy and egg free as I would something vegan (if I was a dooshy nonvegan).

what kind of stuff are you making? because if they're nut and soy-free, you could just have a sign that says something like, "free of the 8 common allergens!" like a lot of restaurants are doing now.

I once made cookies for a bake sale at Benjamin's school and I did not label - seriously, plenty of people around here think vegan=dirt-flavored (my friends and coworkers know otherwise, but the general public would be suspicious). Maybe I will label them "dairy and egg-free" next time to tip off anyone allergic or vegan (if any other than me exist around these parts) and not make everyone else think I'm trying to feed them sweetened twigs and grass or something.

I like this idea but I am making oreo cupcakes and maybe gingerbread dogs and cats, and will be using EB for the frosting. I know there is soy-free but I don't have any.

I'm not worried about oreo cupcakes selling, even if it says vegan on them. I mean, really, oreo cupcakes! My main concern is letting vegans and dairy/egg free people know there is something they can have while not having them leftover at the end. If I make the dog and cat cookies they will be so cute no one will be able to resist (the sale is for a shelter).

I also have to make 2 dozen of said cupcakes for son's halloween party tomorrow. These I will not label but I will tell the teacher in case any kids have allergic concerns.

I saw label them! Make your sign really awesome looking and colorful and no one will be able to resist.

i say label them. i made a ton of desserts 3 days in a row for a fundraiser (these were the only vegan goodies). they were the only desserts that sold out and people raved about! go for it.. not everyone knows what the V stands for depending on language of origin or other reasons..

It's a perfect teaching opportunity! They'll be like "Wait, vegan = adorable, awesome, and delicious? I never knew!" And then they'll all become vegan and tell all their friends and the world will change and we will live happily ever after.

I would label them for a bake sale. When I donate cupcakes to Toby's school for their cupcake walk during their fall festival, I don't label them because the kids just run and grab one. They pick whichever one looks good.

Are the people running the bake sale vegan-friendly? If they're the type that understand this kind of situation, maybe you can have one label that says vegan and another that doesn't so that if your goods aren't selling well, they could just switch the labels.

Here in my town, I know people would see vegan and run the other way.

I like joyfulgirl's idea of being able to swap them if necessary, or I'd be inclined to just go with dairy- and egg-free. At the Sydney bake sales, we've definitely had non-vegans stop with an excited expression and say how good everything looks, only to back away when they really notice the V-word. If you won't be there to "reassure" them, it might be best to spell out what it means without actually using the word — unless you think there'll be plenty of vegans stopping by anyway.

I like the idea of saying that there are vegan treats available. My experience at work is that non-vegans (regular mainstream omnis, I mean) just won't eat treats labeled vegan. To show them how great vegan baking is, we have to get them to eat it first. But since you won't be around, unfortunately then you can't tell them it was vegan! So maybe the label is better. And it's obviously better from a vegan perspective to find treats in an unexpected place!
