I was just at home visiting my family for my nephew's 2nd birthday, and decided to make cupcakes so I would be able to have some dessert, too. I just made basic choc cupcakes with peanut butter buttercream from vctotw. My family wouldn't try them because, you know, they're vegan cupcakes so they must have "weird shiitake" in them. My aunt, far more openminded, took some home with her. I saw her the next day and she told me how yummy they were, even saying how skeptical she was before trying them. Cupcake Success!!

congrats! it's a beautiful thing when someone realizes vegan baking isn't powdery, tasteless, 'leaf' food. i'm really happy your aunt was open-minded enough to try them, and hopefully the rest of your family will follow suit next time.

Ugh. I would be so angry if my family pulled that rude shiitake on me.

I tried to explain to them that the only "weird" ingredient (to them) is soy milk...but they weren't having any of that. More for me, I say!!

Thankfully, almost no one I know refuses desserts I make. I think they are simply in denial of their suspicions of "weird" ingredients...or they've learned that vegan sweets are at least as good as omni versions. My dad even likes the veganized oatmeal cookie recipe I use better than the original!

Yay! I like giving people cake and telling them it's vegan after, always good for a giggle when they've admitted they like it.

I've started baking cupcakes for any good friend who has a birthday. I even took some cupcakes to a work friend's party and VWAV ginger-maca-coco-carrot cake to a work BBQ. Everyone loved them! They'll ask me later if they're vegan, but these are mostly Whole Foods people, so they already have a pretty good understanding and appreciation of vegan food.

The birthday boy and his girlfriend said the strawberry cupcakes (using the VCTOTW raspberry recipes as a guide) were best cupcakes they've ever had! They were still raving about them days later, even after they'd told me several times how good they were.
