agreed to help make a cake for someone thought I was just going to be the assistant now it appears I'm running the show
cake is supposed to be Chocolate-Orange. although I'm not 100% sure I've got orange extract. or oranges. so I may need to switch to another fruit... or to plain chocolate... depending on what's at home (not home yet).
what recipe I should use? I've got all the ppk books at home if that helps.

The chocolate raspberry blackout cake from VWAV is fabulous if you decide to go with another fruit. If you want to plain, you can use the chocolate cupcake recipe from VCTOTW.

Orange marmalade would give an orange-y taste, if you've got any of that?

For a friend's birthday last year I made a chocolate-orange cake that was a basic vanilla cake that I added orange zest to, with marmalade between the layers. I frosted it with chocolate ganache that I put orange liqueur and orange zest in, and put candied orange slices on top. Any of those elements together would be great - particularly marmalade in the middle and chocolate-orange ganache on top.

I am Michal and I am also interested to make different kind of cakes.. First of all, if you want to make a turntable cake, I suggest you make a chocolate cake since it will be close in colour. Here is a lovely recipe for chocolate cake I use all the time. It comes out moist and delicious.
2 cups white sugar 3 cups all purpose flour 2 tsp baking soda 1/2 tsp salt 1/2 cup cocoa 2 cups water OR coffee 1 cup vegetable oil 2 tbsp distilled vinegar 1 tsp vanilla
Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit Mix dry ingredients together Add wet ingredients Pour into 2 square cake pans Bake for 40 minutes or until moist Once the cake has cooled, frost with chocolate frosting.
Since you're a beginner, I suggest using candies for decor.
To make the buttons, switches, etc. of the turntable use black licorice and candies such as smarties, jujubes, or any sweet candy of your choice.
Be creative and make it your own style.
