I'm going to a Russian restaurant tomorrow. My friend's friend who is not vegan called to ask if they can make vegan food and they said yes. They said their pierogi dough is vegan. Does that sound likely? What should I make sure to ask questions about and be careful about? I know nothing about Russian food. On Saturday I'm going to an Irish restaurant and they're going to make me something custom and not on the menu. Wish me luck!

I do find it kind of funny that out of all the different kinds of food in NYC, my friend chose Irish and Russian. At least she checked to see if I could eat there, and it's the company of the people you're with that matters?

There are traditional recipes if perogy dough that are just flour, salt and water; definitely vegan

However, many current perogy recipes contain egg.

Are they clear that you do not eat animal products, including eggs and dairy ? We often run into restaurants that think vegan is the same as vegetarian.

Our family pierogi recipe is vegan. So it is certainly possible. We also make vegan borscht (before the sour cream is added), but I think it is traditionally meat based and the veg variety is a kosher twist. Our favorite Ukrainian restaurant happens to have a vegan lentil soup and vegan stuffed cabbage recipe on the menu.

The server we got said that the dough actually wasn't vegan, but I ended up getting stuffed cabbage! And french fries since I knew those would be safe. It was good food! Huuuuuuge portions.
