As I mentioned long ago in one of the Halloween-themed threads, I'm being a uber-nerd and hosting a LIBRARY PARTY for Halloween! The idea is that everyone comes dressed as an author or character from a book (or, ok FINE, a sexy librarian), plus everyone brings a book they don't want so it turns into a book swap. Of course, this calls for some great book-themed snacks.

I've already got some drink ideas (Tequila Mockingbird and Dorian Grey Goose vodka punch - hey-o!), but I'm getting stuck on snacks. I want to have at least one thing straight-up Halloween-y so I'm planning to make some red velvet cupcakes with a letter piped on each to line up and spell out "REDRUM" - (hey, The Shining is a book anyway), but I need more finger food ideas. Bad puns welcome.

I have one! Do mini vegan monte cristo sandwiches and stick toothpicks in the center of each. Each toothpick has a flag with a different sequential number on it. The Count of Monte Cristo.

Well, grapes (of wrath) of course...

Love in the Time of Cauliflower? There must be an appetizer involving cauliflower as the main ingredient out there...

On the (rocky) Road bars?

Catcher in the Rye (bread brushetta)?

I'm terrible at these things even when it's NOT almost 2 in the morning. Sorry!

But I freaking LOVE your idea and I can't wait to see what other people on here come up with.

I loved the Frankenstein pops Cara from forkandbeans.wordpress.com made for MoFo (and Frankenstein's a book)

I'd also say Shakespeare has to be included, so I'd suggest tiny pizzas topped with heart shaped pasta (Romeo and Juliette, of course)

I'm more into German literature, but what about Kafka chocolate beetles? (for "The Metamorphosis")?

offer plain cheese breads (if you manage to find or make vegan Gorgonzola...) (and wine) for referring to Ulysses by James Joyce (it's also a traditional food on Bloomsday)

maybe some heart shaped cookies (or anything else, heart shaping should be easy for most finger foods, something like spicy seitan or tofu pieces would be great, too) for The Tell-Tale Heart, by EA Poe?

Some apple dish (apple cupcakes, for example) for Homer's Odyssey

Harry Potter candies (that come in an assortment of spectacular flavors?)

and I'm thinking about lots of Alice in Wonderland themed stuff (just think about the mad hatter's tea time or cakes that say "eat me")

stuffed rice balls or Chinese dumplings for Coleridge's Xanadu poem?

EDIT:
and: for drinks: don't forget the Bloody Mary, as Maria Stuart is a drama from well known German author Friedrich Schiller, too!

Anything purple for The Colour Purple? Something with aubergine maybe.

There's a great vegan website which shows how to make loads of Harry Potter themed goodies, but I'm afraid I can't remember the name right now...

I think the sight with the Harry Potter recipes is called Dumbledoor's Army, or something like that. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

I feel horribly punny for that last one.

I was thinking of Bunnicula too! Celery Stalks at Midnight!

What about James and the Giant Peach anything?

Like Water for Chocolate?

War and Pizza? (Alternately War and Peas)

I want to say Gravity's Rainbow cake, because I love the idea of rainbow cakes, but I really have no idea how to add gravity.

I can only think of cookies and giant pancakes for now, but Pippi Longstocking always seemed like a great hostess to me.

I'm totally stealing this idea for my NYE party. We are very excited. So, RavenMcCoy, If you'd like to let me know what was a hit, share pictures, etc. please do! And if anyone else has more ideas, I'd love to hear them. I've got a menu started. I'll post it tomorrow when I'm not falling asleep.

Proust's madeleines, to be stereotypical.
Lolita's lollipops, also to be stereotypical.
Great Eggspectations - faux deviled eggs.
Onion rings, for Lard of the Rings. Someone will have to linger about, lording over the rings for effect.
Julius Caesar (salad).
The Once and Future [King (Cake)].
Ban(Anna Karenina) cream pie/split/pudding.
Gone with the Wind - bean chili. That should be self explanatory.
Crime and Parnsipmash. Kind of works?
Sputnik Sweet-tarts (a less well known book, author Haruki Murakami).
T(h)ings Fall Apart - a bowl of Tings, obviously.
The Seitanic Verses - Seitan any way you please.
Oliver Twists - bread knots or twisted bread sticks.
The Phantom of the Opera (cake).
Ham on Rye - Ham on Rye.
Ivan[hoe(cakes)].
The Scarlet Pumpernickel - Maybe a beet and tomato based pate on pumpernickel?

Wow, gwen, when I ask for something you are like a machine with the ideas. Weren't you the one with all the savory waffle and sauce ideas ages ago?

Anyway, my menu so far:
drinks
Like Water for Mexican Hot Chocolate (crock pot of Mex. Hot chocolate with optional Kaluha and rum for spiking, and dandies for floating)
Mojitos (Hemingway's favorite drink)
Oliver Twists (martini garnished with both a green olive and a twist of lemon)
There are also drinks called Rhett Butler and Scarlet O'hara, but I think I have enough drinks planned. Soda, water, and of course champagne as it is nye will also be available.

hot
War and Pizza
The Extra Virgin Olive Oil Suicides (bagna cauda with raw veggies and bread cubes for dipping)
Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Caffee (If I can find green tomatoes!)
The Seitanic Verses (VV Peruvian Seitan Skewers) served with
Anne of Green Gables dipping sauce (VV Green dipping sauce)
Artichoke Heart of Darkness dip (with baguette slices and/or crackers)
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (crock pot of TJ's meatless meatballs in bbq sauce)

cold/room temperature
The Grapes of Wrath
Tortilla Flat Chips served with:
The Tell Tale Heart of Palm Ceviche, and
The House on Mango Street Salsa
The Old Man and the Sea Weed Wraps (sushi)
The Catcher in the Rye bread canapés

sweets
Turkish Delight (from The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe)
James and the Giant Peach Pie
A Separate Peace of cake (sliced v'con chocolate bunt cake)
A Clock Work Orange (TJ's chocolate orange)
Lemony Snickets (lemon short bread cookies)

In un-food related fun:
I want to give away book markers as party favors.
We will be giving prizes for costumes (best, sexiest, funniest, scariest, etc. for author, character, and librarian costumes). These prizes are mostly re-gifts, crepe we want out of our house. I am thinking that wrapping in newspaper would be appropriate. Does anyone have a better wrapping suggestion?
I'm thinking of making as decorations posters of the dewy decimal system and "Library Rules" (food and drink are welcome, loud talking singing and dancing are encouraged, etc.)
Anyone got any other good decoration, prize, music, or other non-food ideas?

I'm reviving this very old thread because the LIBRARY PARTY RETURNS! I got lazy last year (and... a horrible hurricane happened) but I've had enough people asking about it so my roommates and I are hosting one again this year, HOORAY! Which of course means: let's think up some more nerdy literary-pun-themed food and drink!

Just to catch you up: when I did this two years ago it was so much fun and went better than I ever could have expected. I don't remember everything we served but the standouts were:
Tequila Mockingbird (pitchers of margaritas, essentially)
Grapes of Wrath
Nineteen Eighty S'Mores cupcakes (belated thanks, TeddyPlanet!)
On the (Rocky) Road brownies

And then of course our guests brought tons more booze. I dressed as Mary Ann from the Babysitter's Club (the braids era) and among the guests I remember there was Moby Dick and Ahab, Pippi Longstockings, and TWO Mrs. Frizzles from The Magic School Bus. It was so much fun. I haven't fully decided on my costume yet for this year, but I'm leaning towards Neely from Valley of the Dolls so I can stumble around in a slip with messed-up hair and smeared makeup. Low maintenance!

This year I'm trying not to do repeats, because I like to make things difficult (although Tequila Mockingbird may happen again), but thanks to this thread I got a lot of new ideas. Here are my thoughts so far:
Carrie's (non-pig's) blood-y marys
Alex's milk-plus (from A Clockwork Orange, probs white russians)
Artichoke Heart of Darkness (love this one, Rhizopus)
Oliver pretzel Twists
Jonathan Franzen's Freedom fries with various dips
Lemony Snicket shortbread cookies (also stealing this from Rhizopus)

I also want to think of something for Love in the Time of Cauliflower and BanAnna Karenina, since those puns crack me up so much. Maybe also a pun that I can link to beer or wine, so I won't have to make too many pitchers of cocktails. Give me your best food and drink ideas!

RavenMcCoy, I am honored that you are using some of my ideas! I did end up making Love in the time of Cauliflower! I cut out purchased puff pastry with a heart cookie cutter for the love part, and topped it with curried cauliflower (cauliflower sauteed with onions and garlic, coconut milk, and curry powder, maybe a few other things), then baked until the pastry was puffed and golden. It was delicious and a hit!

Maybe baby... carrots?

And I love this Anne of Green Gables cordial idea. As long as everyone doesn't end up puking, ha ha.
