So, tomorrow my family is going to IHOP while my Canadian cousins are in town, and my parents asked me if I'd like to go. I'm going to go only because I know it will look weird(er than normal) if all 30 members of my family go and I'm the only one at home asleep.

Has anyone had any success eating there as a vegan? I tried googling it but I kept finding conflicting things about hash browns and the like. Does anyone know if they for sure cook it in butter? I need answers ASAP!

My understanding is it differs regionally. I was told that the blackbean soup was vegan in Atlanta (it was yummy) and not vegan in NJ.

Every time I go there are varied answers on what's ok and not. I tend to stick to a plain salad, and some toast. Sometimes they have a fruit salad. The black bean soup/chili was discontinued at the two in my area, but is still available and vegan back in Kansas. It's frustrating.

one time i got the omelette - hold the egg, hold the cheese. so yeah, basically sauteed spinach and mushrooms. it sucked. but that's all there was.

This is what I would do (and have done on many occasions). Except, it doesn't really make other people jealous, especially when they're sitting in front of a mountain of pancakes covered in whipped cream and bacon. But at least you get to eat!

Argh my parents gave us a gift card to ihop. I feel bad...they really meant well :(

I'm debating if I should go with my omni bf and use the card (where I'll waste money/be disappointed with oatmeal and dry toast) or if I should give it to someone who actually needs food (but will order non-vegan stuff plus it feels disrespectful to my parents to give away a gift).

what a bummer!

Personally, I'd give it away to someone hungry. I've eaten out at plenty of places like that with Musty, and it always just ends up being a drag and sort of a waste of time. I hope you got some other nice goodies too!

I haven't been to IHOP in ages, but last time I went they said the hash browns were typically cooked in butter but that they could definitely do it in oil for me. So I guess just ask.

Brian and I used to eat at IHOP a lot in TN because they had vegetarian chili, and then I would get a side of fries. Then they took it off the menu. But I don't know if other IHOPs still have it.

Depending on the cook, you can get hashbrowns without butter. I've done this before. They are crispier that way. Of course, there are some dick cooks who won't do it.

I've also asked before and got stuff made for me. Can't remember what,though, because it's been years.

The homestyle potatoes at my location were vegan. Don't get a fruit salad! It's defrosted strawberries, and really gross. It does something to the texture. The toast is pretty awesome, and my location had unlimited coffee.
