I made the rejuvelac recipe from the Artisan Vegan Cheese cookbook. I made mine with brown rice. After the rice sprouted after about 3 days of rinsing twice a day, I cultured it with filtered water for about 4-5 days. The liquid became cloudy like it said but the smell is so weird. It's pretty strong and I can't quite describe the smell, it's just not nice at all. I've poured out the liquid into a new jar and it's now in the fridge. I'm not sure if I should proceed. I tasted a TINY drop and it didn't really taste like anything, maybe I didn't taste enough (was too scared to). So anyway, what do you think? How do you know if it's gone bad?

Yep, it's supposed to smell pretty gnarly. I made mine with brown rice too.

I need help with this too! I've been trying to find rejuvelac in a store so i know what it is supposed to smell/taste like, but i can't find it anywhere. I made some and it definitely smelled weird. My mom said it smelled like moldy cheese and throw up. I was afraid to use it, which sucks cos i realllllly want to get started on some cheese.

Mine smelled like gym socks, no joke. I was concerned. But dairy cheese can get pretty stinky, too, so I pressed forth bravely. It turned out fine in the actual cheese!

My first attempt using spelt berries smelled like ear cheese... Like when you stretch your ear lobes and that resulting dead skin "white cheese" buildup? You know what i mean. It was gross. I threw it out and got discouraged from trying again haha.

I think I might have drained and rinsed mine too many times. Before the last rinse, there were a lot of bubbles in the water. But now, there aren't really any bubbles at all. I've got it in two jars, and one of them tastes kind of tangy, but the other just tastes kind of stale. Do I need to start over?

My rejuvelac smelled like a back alley bathroom in Chinatown; absolutely foul. I used it anyway, and it made great cheese.

Mine smells somewhat sour, but certainly not anything like the smell that the rest of you are describing. I guess I'll give it another day, and it it's still not working, I'll try again.

Rejuvlac smells like opened stale beer after a party the next morning, IMO. Not that I have any recent experience with this but the smell evoked that memory for me. If you want to get rejuvelac without making it you can get on amazon.com. From a shipping standpoint it's a best value to buy two bottles. Be ready to wait for it. I have ordered it twice and it took over a week to get. http://www.amazon.com/Rejuvenation-Comp ... =rejuvelacI also compared prices this seems to be the cheapest price.
