I like my martinis like I like my men--dry, dirty, and full of gin.

I have a bottle of celery bitters and I like putting a shake or two in a martini. Cel.er.y.

I do actually have to agree with this. I mean, I could pour anything in a martini glass: orange juice, coffee, ink, blood. But that doesn't really make it a martini. And I am definitely not up for an orange juice coffee ink blood "martini". Still I do on occasion enjoy those sweet drinks that masquerade under the name of martini.

I didn't know what a dirty martini was so I googled it and this is what I came up with: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dirty_Martini_(burlesque)

It's been a hot minute since I've had one, but every time I used to go to a martini bar in town I had them make me this http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/guy- ... index.html

One time I had strangers ordering them, the pickle martini is a sensation!

Gin, dry as a bone, shaken, with olives.

Pickle juice is insane in a cocktail. Have you had it with whiskey yet? Especially good with spicy pickle juice.

I'd agree that froo-froo drinks aren't martinis: they're cocktails. I'd say a cosmo is a type of martini though. It's mostly vodka, with just a little bit of cran and orange liqueur instead of vermouth. When I went to bartending school we learned cosmos in the martini unit as it's the same basic recipe.

I think extra dry martinis are dumb. Just call it a glass of gin!

Winston Churchill said that the only way to make a martini was with ice cold gin and a bow in the direction of France, and Alfred Hitchcock said the closest he wanted to get to vermouth while drinking martini was to look at the bottle from across the room.

If a glass of cold gin was good enough for those guys, it's good enough for me!

Winston Churchill and Alfred Hitchcock are dumb too. Drinking gin is fine but it's not a cocktail. Fight fight fight!

It's too hot to fight; let's just drink instead!

Apparently once a year I decide to try martinis. Last year's attempt failed and I hated it. Tonight I decided that I want to be able to order a martini comfortably and drink them without making the Icky Face by the time I'm 30, so I have a little over 3 years to get to that point. I made a very dry, extra dirty gin martini with 2 olives and so far I like it. Granted, I am 3 sips in, but that is progress! I will finish this drink!

The reality is I like olives more than I like martinis...so when I do have one, super dirty is the way to go! (Although isn't super dirty ALWAYS the way to go? ;)

Yep, Vodka for me, dirty all the way. I had some fantastic ones made with Grey Goose in a Sheraton in Anaheim. That much gin makes me heave (although I like a gin and tonic very much)

Mat.

I prefer them with gin, no vermouth (is that extra dry?), and garnished with an olive. Must be served ice cold. Don't care about shaken vs stirred.

Gin! I love olives so I like a dirty martini for sure, but I also like a Gibson with a pickly onion garnish.

I only like to order them at certain places though, because a mediocre martini makes me sad, I'd rather have something else entirely.

I agree. To me, a Martini is gin and Vermouth, otherwise I want to call it something else. And I chose Other because I don't like Martinis.
