I scored some koji at a Japanese market in Los Angeles this weekend. Now I can finally try making my own miso. Wish me luck!

I need kombu and mirin but it's not in any of the stores here! I'm subbing for now.

Did you guys see that there is now an English version of the most popular Japanese cooking website Cookpad?

https://en.cookpad.com/

This is not vegan by any means but it is full of homestyle Japanese cooking, and they are translating more and more recipes!

(I found out on JustHungry so credit should go to Maki.)

I wish they had a vegetarian category on cookpad, it would make vegan recipes so much easier to find, like they are on maki's site.

I've started to make meaty recipes and just substitute tofu or seitan or something. And use non-fish dashi obviously. That opens a lot of recipe opportunities.
Also, many categories of recipes are kind of vegan by default like pickles or vegetable sides. For sweet things check out the Allergen Free Desserts, there are many Eggless recipes on there and milk products can be very easily substituted. Same for using agar instead of gelatin.

I want to make these: https://en.cookpad.com/recipe/1318934

I've only ever seen this kind of dessert at one place, and it was amazing.

If you're ever in New Paltz, NY, this is the place to go - http://gomenkudasainy.com/menu/vegan-menu/

Thanks for the tip! I love New Paltz and would never have thought of trying a Japanese restaurant there! Also, YUM!

If you want to have a Japanese food playdate with the girls, let me know - we could make avocado rolls and this dessert....

Yeah, we love that place and go every time we have a reason to be up there. Found completely by accident.

Malka certainly likes sushi!

They also serve this, which is super yum: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Y%C5%8Dkan
