Milk shakes (or frappes if you're in Massachusetts) are primarily ice cream, with some milk and possibly some fruit. Smoothies are primarily fruit and milk, usually without ice cream.
(Read dairy or non-dairy in there as you see fit. I don't feel like typing out "soy" or whatever in front of everything.)

I am on the side of the FRAPPE! (Pronounced "Frap.") (Because I lived in Massachusetts, see.)

another thing about frozen banana 'ice cream' is that it doesn't really have the same texture as ice cream, either. once they're out of the freezer and start to melt, the bananas immediately get, while still creamy, more 'slimy' than 'milky'. putting beans in brownies might give them a denser texture, but also make your brownies taste beany, unless you use a lot of cocoa and sugar, which isn't the point of black bean brownies to be 'healthier'? i guess beans would make them protein-filled brownies. also, tofu in smoothies. yes, even silken. i just got a smoothie that tasted like tofu.

(and the places that make it with the juicer never let the bananas start thawing. they pull them out of the freezer and shove them through right away. they don't get a chance to get slimy.)

I think the deal is that people claim that you "can't tell the difference" between food processed frozen bananas and soft serve, which is just not true. I like the banana goo when I want something healthy and frozen, but soft serve, it is most definitely not.

The selection of vegan ice creams here sucks (unless you want vanilla in eight different brands), to hit that craving I eat bananas with melted chocolate chips and peanut butter. And you know what? IT TASTES JUST LIKE ICE CREAM. Except it doesn't, but it hits the spot.

An egg cream is essentially seltzer water, milk, and chocolate syrup. No eggs involved, and easy to veganize. Sounds weird and gross, but it's pretty good, especially in the summer. My dad, who was raised by lower-East-Side-Jewish parents, used to make them for my brother and me when we were younger.
