My Brother recently came back from Portland to visit us so he basically said to avoid soy because it causes moobs?... and wants me to eat whey protein and lift weights which i can barely do...

I'm pretty apprehensive about what he's saying... i don't know what i should do, ignore his opinions?

Also i don't see the need for meat/milk anymore i disgust the very thought of it...

Your brother came back from the land of vegan with pro-animal supplement ideas and anti-soy information. I'm confused too.

My sentiments exactly, Gracia! That sounds awful suspicious. However, I'm not able to link you to any articles here but I'm pretty sure that's false or hyperbolic.

In the past few years there have been some studies done on men's health and soy.

Scary articles like this one http://www.menshealth.com/nutrition/soy ... ve-effects
Have been popping up all over.

Basically (in a nutshell) if you have estrogen problems, your body creates too much estrogen for some reason, soy can make that worse. Or if you overdose on soy (like the person in the article did) it might cause some kinds of problems. If you overdo ANYTHING is is going to give you problems

Someone whose brain is not mush today can probably sum it up better for you and give you some references.

These kind of scare tactic articles are all over the place right now pointing out obscure cases and skewed studies. There is another thread in this same forum currently about scary grain studies and how eating grains is bad for you.

Takeaway. NO SOY MILK NOT GIVE YOU MOOBS.

I don't even think you need articles to debunk those claims!

Ok, I am embarrassed about my terrible summary above defending soy.

There are many good souces that debunk many of the soy moobs facts, which we have discussed here before. Here are my favorite article that I usually refer people to

http://www.veganhealth.org/articles/soy_wth

and here is a thread where we talk about it in detail, and there are a plethora of links.

viewtopic.php?f=25&t=20772&hilit=soy

Sometimes us vegans, we gotta defend ourselves! Always helps to be able to back it up.

(I have been writing copy all day...now I can't even write legible posts in a forum when I take a 5 minute break! haha.)

I'm more confused. I thought you could not eat soy.

So even if soy makes you sprout boobs from head to toe, why would you care?

Please do not interpret the following as impudent, but as advice that will assist you as it did me along your vegan path based on the threads you've started on this forum: Learn To Research.

Posting on this forum, asking questions, is only step one. Step two, take initiative and look for vetted sources of information from the medical community, news media, and books- but keep a healthy amount of skepticism. Contrary and often blatantly false nutritional information is propagated through every corner of the internet, so use Google scholar to search peer-review journal articles, limit the search to the past four-five years, and find articles like this, and in plainer English, this. I'll quote that last one: "there is essentially no evidence from the nine identified clinical studies that isoflavone exposure affects circulating estrogen levels in men."
