These are very meaty, chewy, tasty and can be made out of the pantry. This recipe makes very protein-y burgers, it doesn't use starches etc. for binding and that is why I like it. I never have the tapioca called for and they are awesome without as well! I have never tried the Gardein burgers but I assume that they also try to amulate a real meat burger. You can adjust the spices in the recipe to make it more similar to the Gardein ones and maybe that will give you the result you are looking for.
