Hello all! I'm new to the PPK forum.
I've been thinking about making my own seitan (never have before, I'm not much of a cook so I'm usually a beans and rice girl). Do you guys actually BUY a steamer, like an electronic contraption, or do you just use one of those insertable baskets that goes in a pot?
Thanks for any and all answers!

I have an electric steamer that I use to steam seitan. It was a present. BUT, that's the only thing I use it for. I steam vegetables and other things on the stove. So it's very much a unitasker. I appreciate it, because I don't have to worry about running out of water part way through, but it's really not a necessity. A steamer pot insert is much more useful.
If you have a pressure cooker, they often come with steamer inserts.

I use a silicone microwave steamer or an insert to use on a pot on the stove.

Thanks for your insight! I think I'll just grab a steamer basket instead...I already own way too many cooking contraptions and I have a teeny tiny kitchen.

You can also bake seitan in the oven, in covered pan with some broth. The texture will be slightly more firm, but that's not a bad thing. I have a big steamer pot like the one in the picture below that I got from a Chinese store. I use it for seitan, veggies and steamed breads. I like that it's huge, so I can make double or triple batches.

I use an electric steamer. It's great! It has a min/max water level and a timer. I love it.

I have a cheapo steamer basket (for using in a pot) and a rice cooker that came with a steamer basket insert. Both work to steam stuff. I don't think you need a special steaming device to get good results, the inserts work great. Just keep an eye on the water level whilst you steam. :)

I just use the cheapo steamer fold out thingy. You can layer seitan sausages on top of each other and it works out just fine. or, if I'm making a recipe and the seitan loaf is too big for my pot, i just make it into two loaves.

In a pinch, pretty much anything that's heat safe and holds your seitan out of the water can be used.

I have a steamer pot, and it's great for tamales too. Actually, it was called a tamale steamer when I bought it
