Post subject:  How To Make Hot Cereal More Interesting?

Quick and healthy breakfasts for the workday always ellude me. Hot cereal seems like a good choice, but I get tired of it quickly.

I've tried rotating the fruit I put in.

I'm guessing the next thing to do is swap out the spices and sweeteners.

What else could I try using besides cinnamon or pumpkin spice?

Any other ideas for making hot cereal interesting ( yes, I already sprinkle various nuts and seeds in )

Here are a few ideas:
berry oatmeal cooked with some light coconut milk and water
pumpkin pie oatmeal (cooked with water + pumpkin puree + appropriate spices and sweeteners, add walnuts if desired)
peach oatmeal with sliced almonds and a drop of almond extract
oatmeal cooked with mashed banana with some sliced bananas and melted no-stir peanut butter drizzled over the top
Chocolate Covered Katie also has a number of oatmeal recipes that look delicious.

Oh, I don't know, maybe I mentioned it in one of the other threads somewhere... but last year I created a vegan version of Starbucks' All Day Breakfast Pot for MoFo. It's really awesome, especially if you grate the apple.

For an occasional treat, hot cereal plus jam plus speculoos = delight.

Most of the time I just do jam/preserves and nut butter, or fruit and nut butter, or fruit and nuts.

Do you also rotate your cereal grain? That might make it somewhat more interesting too.

I like a 50/50 mix of oat bran and rolled oats. It's more interesting than just plain oats (if you're the type of person who considers oat bran interesting...).

Have you tried quinoa, couscous, brown rice, or other whole grains in your hot cereals? They add nice variety and you can flavor them as you would normal oatmeal.

Or try this tasty oatmeal creation: caramelize chunks of banana in a smidgeon of coconut oil for 5-8 minutes, turning to ensure all sides brown and soften, then add 1/2 cup oats, 1/2 cup almond milk, 1/2 cup water, and a pinch of cinnamon. Adding peanut/nut butter is delish, too.

Or try making your oatmeal with brewed tea for a fun twist.

Using pureed banana instead of water, walnuts, and maple syrup is banana bread-y.
