Made popcorn on the stove, check Too much in the bowl to dab earth balance on, check small ramekin to melt earth balance in microwave, check microwave, check turn microwave on, 2 seconds in, and hear and see signs like metal is in there, check
what the hell happened? nothing metal was in there, the ramekins are microwave safe, and i've melted earth balance sticks (which have a metallic wrapper) in the microwave before without a problem. Please convince me I didn't just break the microwave, or if I did, it wasn't my fault...

Maybe some of the wrapper was left on the earth balance?

Nope! It was from a tub. I'm scared to use the microwave now.

This will not make you feel better in any way, but we had an experience kind of like that. I have no idea how or why, but our microwave just started melting one day when we were using it. It was just a regular old plate of food in there and it just started making noise and there were lights and the smell of burning plastic. No fun.

Once a cube of frozen basil caused my microwave to do this!

My microwave used to do this now and then. Microwaving small things seemed to set it off more often. It hasn't done it in a long while, maybe because I no longer nuke small items by themselves.

This happened to me once re-warming a canned biscuit. I assumed there was a tiny piece of the foil from the inside of the can somewhere in the biscuit. It smelled and tasted burnt after about 15 seconds in the microwave. Very weird. No adverse effects to the microwave.

Maybe it caused a sort of short circuit/arc type deal? I know that things like halved grapes can do that kind of thing, even though there's no metal... it's just a result of the electrolytes present in the fruit.

that happened to me to a few years back. it was freaky and scary and we got rid of the microwave and got another one.
then the same thing happened to that, and then i just decided that considering it's basically just a glorified popcorn machine when i own one, it was better to just not have a microwave.
ps. stovetop popcorn are the best.

Perhaps your microwave thought that you were in a bad mood and tried to cheer you up? were you in a bad mood?
