Do you guys know what brands of wonton wrappers are vegan? My friend in Richmond is making ravioli with them for New Years Eve dinner and can't seem to find any without eggs.

I can't remember the name of the brands, but I can usually find eggless varieties at the Asian grocery store here in town. Otherwise, you could try making them if you can't find them? I think there is a recipe in Skinny bisque (the newer cookbook with just the one author)

i've yet to find any here in rva without eggs (i've only seen the Nasoya ones in Krogers and such), but i admit i have not checked the Tan-A asian grocery store. if it's richmond, va - the store is @ 6221 w. broad street richmond, va 23230. my guess is that they may have some (probably in the frozen section), but i'm not overly sure to be honest. worth a try though if they're ever around that store!

the brand i can find here is wonton specialist inc. they're based in brooklyn.

i tried to find a picture and/or link to their website, but their website is giving me a 404 error and i can't find any friggin pictures of the label.

eta: found a picture of... i guess their store or something? but anyway, that's exactly what the label looks like.

thanks guys! Happyfaced, I'm pretty sure that's the store my friend goes to, but I don't think he's checked there yet. I'll let him know!

also, thanks, esme! I will be on the lookout for those.

I have better luck finding potsticker wrappers and turning them into wontons. They taste the same to me, but that may because I fry them.

Not quite the same, but I found lumpia wrappers that were vegan in my Asian grocery store. They were in the frozen section which was kind of odd and they were very thin and dry out easily so it takes some getting used to.

Esme, where did buy those wrappers?

I tried making raviolis from scratch yesterday and it was a disaster. I'm thinking wontons are the way to go instead, but I've only seen the nasoya ones with eggs so far.

Make your own! They are super-fun to make, and you can make tons and freeze them for using later.

If you go to the asian stores and look at the gyoza wrappers. There are vegan ones and work as wonton wrappers. :)

I went to an Asian grocery store today and all the wrappers I picked to look at up were vegan... and they had 7 million kinds of tofu. It was BANANAS!

I just found the twin marquis at a super huge Chinese grocery in Edison. They also had seitan made with just wheat gluten & water, no soy! Which is awesome bc my son is allergic to soy and all brands they sell in Heath food stores have soy. Score!!

I've seen the non-egg wonton wrappers at the Asian markets, but they tend to have a bunch of other ingredients that I do not want to consume (even if they are vegan). I made my own dough recently for some Chinese 5-Spice gyoza from Terry Hope Romero's Vegan Eat World, but it's a lot of work. I'm extremely isolated where I live as far as international markets. I just don't know what to do. When I do get to the markets down near where I work, I have to say that I'm lost in the Asian, Vegan food supply: vegan tripe, vegan snake head fish, vegan beef balls, etc. I wouldn't eat these anyway, why would I eat a vegan version, and why did they make it (even with non-GMO soy for extra care)? I had a good laugh while shopping.

I checked high and low recently and even asked my Asian market-shopper friends...no luck. :/

I'm not sure if it was the brand, but I tried making ravioli with wonton wrappers, and it was GOSHDARNAWFUL.

The way I would describe it, despite all the effort, at the end they were like testicles wrapped in goldfish. Just horrible, flippy, floppy, swishy, taily, yuckness.

Next time I'd definitely be following The Urban Vegan's guide to making ravioli: http://urbanvegan.net/2012/11/ravioli-t ... -kale.html

Not really sure about using wonton wrappers for ravioli as I've never tried it, but testicles in goldfish does *not* sound appealing!! For peeps in Aus, I just bought some fresh wonton wrappers from Foodland the other day that are vegan - yellow packet, Supreme Quality Foods brand. Haven't used them yet, but I am going to steam them.
